Hey everyone. I have an 86 four winns liberator 241 that Im having a few problems with on the carb. boat will start up right away and run for a few seconds and die. It seems like the choke is opening up too fast and it will die out. If I hold the choke close by hand it will sit there and idle all day long. Im at my wits end on it and cant figure anything out. I havent done a rebuilt kit yet, and it is a rochestor carb too. close enough on the spelling

Thanks
Joe

If you are holding the choke closed once it is warmed up, it is running lean. Have you checked/changed fuel filter, checked fuel pump? What is the history on the carb (how long have you had it and any previous issues)?

Re: Carb problems

I agree, it is probably time to rebuild. Boats need this way more often then cars ever did. Also draw a little fuel off in something clear, let it set for a 1/2 hour and see if there is any water in it. If your fuel is good, time for a rebuild. It is a Rochester if it has 2 idle adj, screws and a Mercarb if it only has one.

What are we working on here? 84 four winns means nothing. Need to know drive package, i.e. 5.0 MerCruiser, 5.7 OMC, 5.7 Volvo, etc.

Could be a Holley if its an OMC or Volvo.

Re: Carb problems

okay i have its and 86 four winns liberator 241 with a 454. Maybe i didn't explain it too clear. the boat will fire right up and run for a few seconds. but will not stay running at all if i don't play with the choke at all. The gas is all fresh completely drain all the gas out of the tank and the lines. I am currently restoring this boat. I don't know much previous history on this boat. only thing I do know the motor was rebuild back in 06 and it has only 100 hrs roughly on it. Like I said if I play with the choke while its running I can get it to run no problem and sounds great. but if i let it do everything on its own it will only fire for a few seconds then dies. 454 mercruiser with a trs drive

Ayuh,... So Rebuild the carb,+ fix the choke while yer at it....
It sounds like the idle circuit is Plugged or atleast restricted...

Re: Carb problems

Carburetor mounting flange gasket, it's leaking in air so when you choke it the mixture becomes volitile, maybe?

Re: Carb problems

Gasket is brand new, but I have seen it happen before. It's not an electric choke, its the bi-metalic choke or whatever they call it. That seems to be working right but it's a cheap part to replace. Im just a little leary about rebuilding the carb. Never once have rebuilt a carb on a boat. Done lots of snowmobiles and quads and dirt bikes. It's pretty hard to find someone around here that is relibile on rebuilding these carbs without me bring the boat to them. As of now the boat is pretty gutted new floors just went in. But I want to make sure this thing runs like it should before i invest any money into the interior and carpet
