Hello everyone. Im new here and just found a sweet little alumacraft. Its a 1955 r (#r1596) It has everything intact, Windsheild, steering, motor controls and trailer. Best of all I have titles for the boat and trailer. Not bad for free!!!!!!!!!!

I will be bringing it home this weekend and start the restoration. I called Alumacraft and they gave me all the info and a few pictures. I searched the net and cant seem to find any info or photos on this model. Is it that rare?

As for the restoration anyone know where I can find some info on the finishes and replacing the windsheild?

I will post more pics when I get her home.

Welcome to iboats...and the tin can club:)

Sounds like a real sweet vintage rig, I'd bet money that the outboard is 50s vintage too.

Post up some photos when you get a chance so we don't have to use our imaginations:D

Hey huron, I dont have the outboard, just the controls. I think I will power it with a modern 2 stroke. I plan on using it often and maintenance will be eaiser. However I would like to find a vintage motor for it to restore.

I just found a great deal on a electric start 20hp evinrude with controls. Its a 1998 and he is asking $400 bucks. Do you guys think this is too much motor for this little boat?

Re: New toy whoohoo!!!

Ok guys, upon further inspection the windshield was added as the cockpit.
So... I have a 1955 runabout with the enclosed bow. I want to go back to as stock as I can. So Im going to remove all of the additions and pop some rivets in the holes as temporary cosmitic plugs. It seems to in great shape.

So..after finding out what I have I decided to power it with a vintage tiller.

I found a running un restored johnson qd11 (1950 10hp sehorse ) with the original stand and gas tank. (Weak spark, and carb a little gunky) But a nice clean unit.

Now for questions....any direction you guys can lead me in cleaning the hull.

Just to let you guys know..Im a idiot, I have screwed up a few projects. So Im asking before I do, this stuff I have is in too good of shape to make a mistake.

Lets get this thread active. I going out and taking a bunch of pictures for you guys to kick off some activity on this.

Thanks in advancce

A 1:1 mix of vinegar and water is a good safe way to clean the hull. Just scrub it and spray with a hose or power washer to get her shiny again.

There are products out there that will make that aluminum like a mirror if you want that look.

Re: New toy whoohoo!!!

Welcome Spat.
I've got an old '59 model R that I'm working on too. Mine is currently set up for tiller operation but I will eventually change her back to a runabout.
Is your steering deck original? I'd love to see it. That was an option which I don't have. Mine's a 12 footer with a bow cover.

Good luck,

I think we have the same setup. The helm was mounted forward and the forward air tank was cutout (Ouch). So I dont have a steering bridge thinngy. If I was 5' tall it would work great.

I keep forgetting to charge my camera batteries, I will post my setup soon.
