So some friends and I hit the lake last weekend to do some wakeboarding and just cruising around on one of our local lakes. After a few hours we decided to head over to the far side of the lake where the river runs into it, there is a big rock there that people swim and climb up and jump off of. So we are idling in, mind you its a no wake zone but not just where it narrows into the river, its a no wake zone for a pretty good sized area. As we get up to where the rock is there is these 2 people (man and wife) in a little jon boat fishing off to the side, we idle by and my friend asks how they were doing, the lady responds "not well, been pretty quiet" and then the guy has to throw in "We'd be doing a lot better if all these freakin boats would stop coming through" Another friend that I was with who was driving the boat just said "Ok buddy, the lake is for everyone to enjoy."

The sweet justice was that about 10 seconds after we idled by, they caught a nice fish, their first one for the day lol.

I know the guy had to feel like a jackass after making the rude comment then catching the fish, he would even look at us when we idled back by after doing our swimming in the river.

I just hate people that are grumpy like that and have to make comments, we are all there to have a good time.

There are many, just generally, unhappy people in the world...though I would hope in boating you will meet less of them.

They shouldn't anchor at a bottleneck of boat traffic if they don't want boats to cruise by.

Some people like watching boats cruise by as a form of entertainment.

Sounds like they need to remember that boating is fun:D

You people today, with yer fun, tryin' to enjoy yerselves. In my day, we were miserable, and we liked it. We didn't boat fer fun. Our mothers sent us out because we needed to eat. Now look at ya. Having fun. Driving boats on the water. Ya should find out what rowin' is like. That'll learn you. Get off my rock, you little sons-of-b--ches! I know where you live!

To the OP, how close were you to this fishing boat, and how much room did you have to pass. If you had a mile to go around him, and passed within a fishing lines length away, there might be cause for his response? If he was tied up fishing in the heart of the boat traffic area, well then he is getting what is to be expected.

people who act like they are entitled to something that public deserve to get punished. I would have offered to assist him with some rather nice waves. But I'm extremely impatient and generally calm. My wife would have yelled at me though too. Oh well.

my thinking exactly,

A Berkeley Jet (75ft rooster tail) would be a great way for them to learn to "share the lake." :D

Re: Why can't people just be nice.

I am sorry, I have sick sense of humor.

A few years ago we were watching this bonehead in a small i/o runabout lifting his drive way up to spray his buddies on a pontoon boat. He did this for a good 15 minutes.

I don?t remember much about that weekend, but I do remember the look on the drivers face as his buddies in the pontoon towed him home.

I know it?s not very nice to laugh at someone?s misfortune, but when somebody is asking for trouble. It?s kinda funny when they find it.

I don't like rude people either, but you never really know the situation. He very well could just be a grumpy old man. However, there may be more to it...lost a job, marital problems, illness ...or wishes he was in his good boat that is in the middle of a restore.

Re: Why can't people just be nice.

We tried being nice once. It didn't work out too well. They even came up with a quote about it:

"Nice guys finish last"

Heck, there's even a frickin' Wikipedia article on it:

A typical "nice guy" is a man who is likely to put the needs of others before his own, avoid instigating confrontations, do favors, give emotional support, and generally act in a way consistent with the general meaning of "nice".
