I bought a small skiff a few months ago. I checked the wheel bearings and all the points of lube on the motor' honda 25'. I called the previous owner and he said he used all purpose lithium grease. Is this what i should keep on using or change to a different brand? If i should change is there anything i should do because i have read you should not mix certain types of grease. Any info i would greatly appreciate. Love this site!!!

Re: Grease question

Are you going to boat is salt water? If so, use some marine boat trailer wheel bearing grease or salt water resistant grease. It is a bit better.

I doubt you will have any issue mixing the grease, however, since the trailer is new to you, I recommend you inspect the bearings and regrease them at that time. Wipe away the old dirty grease as best as you can. Bearing buddies help keep water out of the bearings. I recommend them.

Of course if you are going on a long trip, I would inspect the bearings prior to leaving. I hate surprizes.

Re: Grease question

Thank you for the info. I am going to repack bearings and use a good marine grease on motor and bearings.

Re: Grease question

I use the marine grease on both and have never had a problem.

With the bearings just be carefull you don't over tighten them, nothing kills a bearing faster.

Re: Grease question

I agree with using marine grease regardless. If not for saltwater protection from corrosion, it's for wash-out protection to keep the grease in place.

I decided to use Lithium-based marine grease many moons ago, but recently migrated to synthetic grease (AMSOIL red grease from my mechanic). I also considered Waterproof Green Grease available at Advance Auto. Since my mechanic works on my rig, I figured staying with the same stuff takes all the compatibility questions out of it.
