Hi all, I've done a search and couldn't quite find my answer so I thought I would ask here. My engine is a 1959 anniversary sportwin 10HP. It was given to me so I have nothing in it yet. Before I start spending money I wanted to find out a couple of things.

#1. The engine did not come with a tank or fuel line, how can I tell if it has a fuel pump or if it's still pressure type? I see something that looks like a pump on the side of the power head, but I don't have a manual and even though I am a mechanic I'm not familiar at all with these old motors.

#2. What choices do I have for service manuals and what is the BEST one avaliable?

Thanks,
George

I think the easiest way to tell is look at the fuel line fitting on the engine. If it is the three prong one (air, gas, alignment stud) then it takes the pressurized tank. If someone added a fuel pump, then it will be a two pronged fitting.

Hmm, so I have this:

which leads to this:

So the line being two prongs plus alignment means it is still a pressure system. :( I guess it will sit in the corner of my shop for a while then, maybe I'll screw with it this winter. I was hoping I could buy a tank and line and go fishing, but now things get more complicated with needing a special line, special tank (which may need rebuilt) and it's just not worth the effort for this summer. I guess I can spend my time making it pretty for next year:) Here is what it looks like now, lots of room for improvement;)

Those pics show a fuel pump and single line fitting. No pressure tank needed.

Oh, I thought the two brass fittings meant double. I guess maybe I shoulda counted hoses instead of brass fittings and then I wouldn't look so stupid:redface: In my defense, I've had a long day and I was dropped at birth;). All I've dealt with in the last ten years had had fixed tanks and at most a primer bulb so I kinda forgot what it was like to use a "portable" outboard :) I guess that means I can grab a tank at the store and see if she'll run this weekend:D

Thanks,
George

Yes, you have the fuel pump option in the pictures. The standard engine did not. I have the parts manual for it, if you PM me with your email address and your request I can send it to you.

Before running it, I would do the basics first. Check compression. Pop the recoil and take a look through the window in the flywheel at the ignition components. If the coils are clean and not cracked, then check for spark. If you have spark and compression, you can make the motor run and it's likely worth moving onto a waterpump impeller and carb rebuild (with new alcohol resistant gaskets).

As for a manual, OEM is best, but for basic tune-up stuff the more readily available Seloc manuals really aren't as bad as some folks make them out to be.

Re: 1959 sportwin 10hp with a couple of questions

Thanks for the advice, now I have another question. There are two twist knobs and one pull knob, what do they do? I assume the pull out is choke, but the other two I am lost at. I can prime the fuel and pull the rope and it will hit a little, but not start up. What should I be doing with those knobs when trying to start the engine?

thanks,
George

They are the carburetor mixture adjustments. They adjust the fuel/air mix for optimum operation.

Unless you have good reason to suspect somebody has been twirling them, you don't have to do anything to them to start the motor. Adjust them for best running once under way (on a boat), then forget them. But may need minor readjustment if you take it to a very different altitude or temperature.
