hi....

my little bilge liner...('90 3l merc i/o) devoloped a carb problem.

it seems that the float bowl is emptiying into the main body of the carb.

i tried to start it...it fired and ran for about 2 seconds....then quit (flooded)

i pulled the aircleaner and looked....i saw the gas trickeling out of the bowl area and pooling on the butterflys...

i havent rebuilt a carb....but i am gonna do this one.....i mean its a 2 bbl....how hard can it be....?

my question is....what part has failed that allows the fuel to pour from the bowl into the throat?

(no its not the fuel pump spitting into the carb)

thanks guys

There are 2 tiny holes on top of the jet block (that bolts in to the throat and has the venturis that extend in to the carb) They are there to break the siphon that can occur because the jets are down in the carb below the fuel level. If they become plugged, and I said they are very tiny, fuel will siphon into the carb and down in to the manifold. Only use something soft like brass or copper wire to open them or a tiny torch tip cleaner. Do not enlarge them or your carb will run too lean.

One thing to look for ( I spent 30 years with this crap on cars) Is a bad float. If the float has a hole in it , it will suck in gas and become very heavy causing all the gas to leave the bowl. The other thing to look for is a stuck BB. Yes the lower passages and venturies sometimes have BBs in them, to restrict fuel flow. If it is stuck it will not do its job. I have also found dirt in the idle circuit will cause this as well.
