Bad Coil?

Not sure if I have a coil problem but in the the beginning of the day I can start right up cruise around with no hesitation but as soon as I turn off the ignition and go to restart it just turns over like there is no spark just cranks.
I can sit for hours before it will start again.

I was reading some post and they say how coils can over heat and that could cause no spark until it cools.

I was wondering if that where the problem would it happen as I am moving?
The weather has been much hotter then normal.

Thanks for your responses.

Re: Bad Coil?

A few things you can try. Before shutting down the engine after a run, let it idle for a minute or two which will bring down the engine temp a little.
Before restarting try cracking open the throttle just a little. IMHO a little more engine info will help

Coils that get hot generaly fail. It won't matter if you're just starting it up (hot) or running. If your coil was bad, it would kill the motor, or make it run bad. I think you got issues elsewhere. Check the Adults Only section at the top of the forum. To many varibles that only you know.

when it dies, verify what you have lost. Is it fuel or spark? Don't know what you are working on so can't be real specific...

It is a 93 5.0 mercruiser 2 barrel with a rebuilt a carb.

It runs great on the muffs can't get it to not start or it only happens when I am in the water and helpless.

Might start with the operation of the choke. Cold start- remove the flame arrestor and give the throttle one full push, this should close the choke within a 1/4 inch of all the way. Fire it up and watch as the choke fully opens. If it does not fully open it can be adjusted.

I'm betting after you shut it down you have fuel pushing past the needle and seats flooding the engine.

Thanks for the info. my only fear with starting it without the flame arrestor is the possible back fireing and possible fire.

I had this exact problem....after purchasing a rebuilt carb. The carb was junk and was allowing fuel to keep seeping in (other major problems with it as well). When you shut it off and it won't start, put it in nuetral, give it FULL throttle while cranking (be ready to back it off as soon as it starts)....if it starts like this it is flooding and you can go from there on the reason why.......

AND AS with all repair work on engines a fire extinguisher should always be present.
