My sister is a new owner of a little 16ft ski barge with a 70hp motor. Engine and boat are in excellent condition but the rig has been sitting for a year. I think longer because the gas in the carbs looks like yellow pee. Anyhow, I'm rebuilding the carbs today, and I was wondering the best way to disable the VRO for this model.

I have an 85 120 someone swapped the VRO pump for a pre-mixer, like the one in the threads floating around here, but I understand you can use the VRO just plug up the oil side?

What's the best way to do this this for this model? I'm assuming I cap the ports at the carb, disconnect and cap somewhere at the fuel pump oil side, disconnect electrical sensors, etc? If someone can guide me a little better than my assumptions I would appreciate it. :)

Thanks

Thanks, I forgot about the sticky.

So it sounds a lot easier than I thought. You just cut the oil line somewhere close to the motor and plug it with a bolt and hose clamp then disconnect the electrical stuff.

I'm doing the carbs right now. The top one is really clean and the #2 and 3 are gummed up really bad. I'm letting them soak in solvent for a small amount of time to get the gum off.

The only thing I'd add is when you plug with the bolt, make sure it's good and tight and use the ratchet type clamp spec'd for the fuel connections by OMC - I had an issue with air leakage and poor idle on a previous engine that had been converted like you're talking about because the plug was not totally tight. Re-plugging with a better clamp solved the problem.

So you recommend the plastic ratchet strap over a stainless steel hose clamp for this?

As far as I know, the plastic ratchet clamps are recommended by OMC/BRP over hose clamps for all fuel and oil connections.

Does this mean that you can't get a good tight safe connection with hose clamp? People have been doing it forever. But ever since I had that problem, I just decided to follow spec and use the ratchet clamps.

2 of the plastic ratchet clamps were still wrangled on the oil line, broken, before I even touched the motor.

I ended up using the bolt method and plastic tie straps to clamp the lines. Everything works normally with no alarms.
