Is it possible to flood a motor so bad you get gas in the oil? My son was in the boat and according to his sister he was pretending to drive and was pushing the throttle lever repeatedly. When I went go out it fired up and died then would not turn over. Not knowing what my son did I thought the battery was dead.Put the boat on the charger over night and tried to start it the next day.It would only turn over a little bit each time and I could smell gas.So I put it to full throttle and it started. Now I checked the oil and it is kinda brownish milky. The oil was fine when I checked it before my son pumped the gas.

Also the motor is a volvo 5.0

Re: Is it possible

it is possible to get fuel in the oil and if it is carburated the accelerator pump will keep squirting fuel everytime it is moved. You should be able to smell the fuel in the oil on the dipstick. If there is a lot of fuel in the oil you can burn it on the dipstick. pull the dipstick and CAREFULLY use a lighter and see if you can light the oil at the end of the stick. If it lights and burns for a couple seconds there a a lot of fuel in the oil. If you had to hold it at full throttle to start it then he did flood it (wet the plugs) and you needed the large amount of air it get it dried out enough to start.

WITHOUT CRANKING THE ENGINE most fuel bowls do not hold that much fuel 6-10 oz`s. It will pump untill the bowl runs out of gas. So I dont think you would contaminate 4 qts of oil.
I would suspect a ruptured diaphram in the fuel pump.

Sure all the time, but that would mean the fuel pump was refilling the carb and cranking, no just sitting pumping the throttle not enough in the bowl. You should be able to smell the gas in the oil from the dipstick.

Yes I can smell gas on the dip stick,How much gas would it take to make it creamy of did I suck in water trying to start it with the muffs on?

Gas in the oil should not make a "Creamy" color. It would just make the oil thinner.

I agree with the other gents. There is not enough fuel in the bowl to contaminate your oil...

Re: Is it possible

Hi, I had fuel dilution in my 3.0l from a bad pump diaphragm.
First noticed due to the oil level had increased then the smell.
Oil also felt a lot less viscous but was not "milky".

As fuel will lower the oil viscosity then a quick way to check is get a piece of flat glass. Place a drop of new engine oil and a drop of old oil from the engine on the glass and then tilt the glass. The drop that has the lower viscosity will run off the glass faster. If you have fuel dilution then the drop of old engine oil will run off substantially quicker.

You can also do a quick check for water. Get a spoon and place some engine oil in the spoon. Heat the bottom of the spoon until oil smokes. If there is water in the oil then it will splutter and spit as the water boils off.
