well i was talking to this guy and he was saying that any motors don't like wide open throttle because it will overheat? and they like constant rpm change so you shouldnt keep the throttle in the same position?

sounds like bull to me but i could be wrong

im still learning:D

i know break in is a different story

and if the motor is propped correctly then it should be fine at any rpm??

if it's overheating then you got other problems right?

Motors set up correctly will be just fine. Now, maybe the motors he sets up and works on will overheat but............

Brand new engines and those that have been freshly rebuilt should not be run wide open for long periods and should also have varing throttle settings during the break-in period. After that, hammer down. If the engine overheats something is wrong with it.

i know that you should break in the engine at certain rpms.

just this guy was sooo wrong??

no engine was made to run wide open?

don't they just run these motors at wide open throttle day and night in and out for testing?

Well cruising speed is best possible fuel consumption. Most boats wot will get you more knots but also alot more gph. although wot is more fun

Well, Let's give him the benefit of the doubt: Most engine problems related to detonation and requiring a rebuild occur at or near full throttle. But this is because of a developed or existing condition.

A correctly set up outboard should run happily all day at full throttle. Most outboards (unless owned by a little old lady from Pasedena) only know two speeds: Off and On!

Do you think the engine in my avatar EVER sees less than full throttle except when docking? "Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead."

The old OMC owner's manuals recommended that you run their motors at what they referred to as "cruise throttle". Crank her up to WOT, then back off just slightly until you hear a slight lowering of the engine speed. If I want to go fast, that's where I run. You lose only about 1 mph but the fuel consumption is better.
