I'm new to boating, so there may be an easy fix for this one. Or, I might just be doing something wrong. I have a 1997 Bay-liner Trophy with a 120hp Force & a quicksilver shifter. The boat starts fine, I put it in throttle only give it throttle/choke. As soon as I bring the throttle down to put it in neutral it stalls. The boat was working fine on Friday, not sure what happen since then. Any help/tips would be much appreciated. Thanks:D

Not really clear on what your problem is. Is it stalling when you put it in gear? or are you saying that you start it in fast idle, give choke, engine starts and then when you bring it back to neutral it stalls? Do you have a tach? Neutral rpm should be 1000 - 1100 rpm, 700 - 800 in gear.

Re: Force120 stalls when taken out of throttle only.

Thanks for the reply, When in fast idle it starts no problem I can bring the idle down to about 10 and anything less then that it stalls. I let it run for a while in fast idle and it holds but the rpm s drop off the closer I get to Neutral. I did have the boat out on Friday afternoon with no problems, I'm not sure what it was idling at then. Is there a good way to test the engine on land? If so what would I need to do that? Thanks again:)

neutral rpm should be set at 1000 - 1100. Do a compression test and check the fuel pump diaphragm.

I have the same problem with mine. I have a 94 Bayliner with the Force 120 and last week it did the same thing yours is doing. The first time around the lake it did fine, but after I shut the engine off for about 20 minutes, it would do that. I simply put my throttle down, start the motor, and then as soon as I back it up to neutral it shuts off. I'll do that for about 20 times or so and then sometimes it will stay running. Since then, I changed the fuel/water separator and inline fuel filter. I'm taking the boat out tomorrow and I'll see how it does.

@ Royal50... Yea, let me know how that works out for ya. I haven't had a chance to play around with my boat yet.

Before going nuts on this, replace the plugs and do a decarb on the engine. Many times, idle problems all lead back to plugs and carbon build up.

Well Jaybee, I went out today as I said I was, and it was hell once again. The first try did not work. After a few times, I got it going and we went around for some laps. I stopped the motor for a few minutes and when I tried to start it again it did the same thing. Now I know is not the fuel filters cause I did put new ones, and my plugs are good. They were clean.
Maybe John is right. Maybe I need to clean my carbs.

The decarbing procedure is to clean the carbon out of your ports and around your rings giving you better compression and fuel flow. It will do a little for your carbs but that is not its main purpose.

Look on the second page of the FAQ in the maintenance section and you can read all about the process.

Re: Force120 stalls when taken out of throttle only.

Thanks for all the help everybody, Problem solved. I should have mention the the key was stuck in the ignition, this was the root to all my problems. The choke was always engaged because the key was stuck in. I had my brother in law take a look at the boat today and found a few things that could have been potential problems...My boat had the original fuel filter and lines from 1996! We did clean the carbs and change fuel lines and filters. We also found out that the top speed was a bit low and we think it's because it has the wrong size prop on it. If any knows what size prop is supposed to go on a 1996 20ft Bayliner Trophy model 2002FF with a 120hp Force outboard. I would appreciate it. I have looked all over the internet, I just can't find it. Thanks again everyone!

Re: Force120 stalls when taken out of throttle only.

I'm jealous! I wish my problem would of been something that easy. I went out today thinking I found t.he problem but it wasn't. I found that one of my fuel hoses was almost coming out and fixed that, but like I said, it wasn't that.
My neighbor did find something odd. He noticed that my throttle cable going into my motor isn't attach to anything. We also noticed that when I shift up on the throttle, it moves the cables in and out. He said they should stay in place. Is that correct? Can that be my problem?
