I have an 84 evinrude 90 hp and it won't rev up in the water when you put it in gear. 10 mph is all i can get out of it. I fogged the motor last fall and this is the first time out this year. any Ideas?

Re: 90 hp vro won't rev

there is a couple of very simple things to do first, there is fresh fuel in the tank? take the cover off and make sure the choke is working on and off, have someone advance the throttle lever and look to make sure the carby butterflies open and the timing advances, from there remove the plugs and have a look at them, are they all the same? do a compression test, are all the numbers fairly even? do all the very simple stuff first, this is assuming it was running OK before!

Check.
Fuel, fuelline and filter
Compression test
Spark test
Clean/rebuild carb

I had the same problem with my 1987 70hp as you. Fixed it yesterday with a good carb clean and found a clouged high speed ori in top carb. Now it runs like a charm.

Hey guys i think i found the problem. Th wires that feed the coils on the right bank were really rusty where they plug on to the coils. I shined them up and hope to do a test run tomorrow night. i'll let you know how i get along. Thanks.

Check/run it after dark. Make sure the coil wires are not shorting to ground by the lower cowling latches.

Re: 90 hp vro won't rev

Ok so here's where i'm at now. I ve cleaned the everliving bejeepers out of every connection on the motor. I have approx 120psi compression on every cylinder. I hooked up a spark tester on every cylinder with a 7/16" gap and I have a nice snappy blue spark on each cylinder.
I haven't water tested the boat because its a bit of a hassle to launch and retrieve it by my self, but i know the problem is still there. Running it with the muffs on, the following symtoms are present.
--- Starts fine, with the fast idle lever up about 1/2 way.ocassionally pops out the prop. seems to load up a bit on that fast idle setting. If I put the lever down it will idle down, pop a few times and stall. It will start right back up.
--- the left bank,(as viewed standing behind the boat) is not generating any heat at all compared to the right side. The spark plugs seem a little wet on all four cylinders. If i pull plug wires on the left bank nothing changes, if i pull one off the right bank the engine dies instantly.
--- The primer switch is clicking when the key is depressed but there is no fuel exiting the line.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
P.S. it turns out that the motor is actually an 86 model.

I'd put an inductive timing light on the two spark plug wires on the port bank while the engine is running. The flashes from the light will show the quality of the spark on that bank.

You might want to swap the powerpacks and see if the problem moves to the other side.

The thermostat on that side may be stuck open.

Examine the ignition coils carefully; if swollen, discolored, cracked, or if the potting is melted, they should be replaced.

Ok so i swapped coil packs from side to side and the problem moved. So i ordered a coil pack and i should be on the water within in the week. Thanks everyone for all your input and i hope that i'll be in a position to help someone out from my experience.
