I have the manual and yes folks, I RTFM, several mutli-meters, and I have been searching posts.
So, the guy i got the motor from says he hooked up a new starter and then it wouldnt run. 125-122-125 psi respectively for compression.

# 1 fires it's on the same CDI as #2 and 2 does not fire but has .745 resistance yellow-blue with them hooked up.
#3 does not fire, and there is one wire to a non-existant coil which did not fire anything, probably cause it's not fired from the stator....if I have this all correct.
1. I checked resistance to the trigger with the wires still hooked up with 2 different meters, one IDEAL and Fluke. #1 47.4/47.2 #2 47.4/47.9 #3 47.4/47.2
2 I checked the resistance from the yellow/blue for front CDI unit .745 and the rear is 0.
All wires are still hooked up and no battery connected.
I tried to be as comprehensive as possible.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm going on to test some voltages while cranking after I figure it out.

You need to make sure the grounds and all connections are tight.I had a problem and it was the connectors. They needed cleaning.Key switch too.J

Re: 88 force 85 hp triple ignition

update: Stranger things have happened but I'm not sure when. So I switched the yellow wires from the junction block to the CDI units. So then 1&2 cylinders fired, but still no # 3, switched them back and down to just # 1 again, does this sound like a stator? There is no way to really check the CDI units with out the peak voltage adapter for my fluke? The blue wires must be the ground from the stator as they go into the the 4th slot together. Then the rear CDI unit is simply fed from the single wire, so is the junction block have a bus inside it that connects slots 2 and 4 ? electrickery, have to love it. I've checked all the wiring via the stickers on the motor, and the manual, everything checks out. I dont want to start throwing $200 parts at it until it runs.
Thank you
Pat

Re: 88 force 85 hp triple ignition

Pat,

The extra wire on the aft CDI module is for a four cylinder as the module is also used on the 125 engine. On the 85hp, it is actually a spare circuit so go ahead and make use of it.

Stators can be ohmed out to determine if they are good or not, the same with the trigger coils.

One area to concentrate on is the connector plugs if your engine uses them. Some are wired directly to a terminal board. These plugs get corrosion, pests nest and loose. Clean them out well and tie wrap them together.

At this point, I suggest you ohm out your stator and trigger and see what you get.

Regards,

John (who also doesn't believe in throwing parts in as a fix)

Re: 88 force 85 hp triple ignition

I am in the same situation right now. I am rebuilding the same motor, no spark on #3, #1 and #2 have spark. Switched the red and orange connectors on the #3 coil, still nothing.

Any suggestions? Bad coil? How do you check the resistance on the coils, stator, any other parts I should be looking at?

Thanks for any help

Hazmateer,

You really need to start a new thread and give all the details about your boat and engine. First thing you should do is purchase Clymer's Force Outboard Shop Manual as you will need it to troubleshoot your electrical system.
