My 1993 Johnson 48 has an idle problem. It runs great at any point except idle, where it likes to kill. Please advise about slightly better idle adjustment.
Some background info would help, is it new to you?
did it run better in the past?
what have you done?
Have you ever rebuilt the carbs?
Were carbs drained for winter/offseason?
Done a compression test yet?
I just purchased the boat. No information available. Previous owner said there were no issues with this boat. I guess he lied. Go figure. I'm thinking that maybe I could get away with an idle screw 1/4 turn???
Jonesq asked all the right questions. As you apparently have no reliable service history on this motor all of these things need addressing before you try running. In addition the lower unit oil and the water pump Impeller will need replacing.
If you disregard these items you could quite easily ruin what may be a good motor.
Sorry to be so tough on you but I have seen so many good motors get destroyed.
A manual would be a good investment if you plan to attempt the work yourself.
