1973 115hp model #115393m rude. PO removed air silcencer cover, motor seems to run well, How ever I`m concerned about a hic up starting a fire, or the vacume (pick up lower carb port side not operating correctly) Does anyone have a spare they would consider selling me? Also I need to replace the water impeller. This motor uses the old style barrel shift connector. Do I need to unscrew the connector as I lower the bottom end? I believe the shifter shaft with the connector attached would pass through the pivot shaft, but after going that far it somehow needs to be removed so that the shaft can pass through the lower exhaust housing. Thanks for any information Roger

You can run the engine without the silencer, but it will be noisey, may have to search out a salvage yard to find one.
You disconnect the shift linkage at the bellcrank under the carbs, do not unscrew it, it will change the linkage lenth and could cause shift problems when reinstalled.

I think I have read several posts here that you can do mucho harm to the engine by running without the silencer. Do some more research on this one.

The silencer is part of the tuned exhaust system. Also, it MIGHT affect the fuel/air mixture that COULD cause engine damage if it is at the critical point...which it shouldn't be.

Re: Can I run without air silcencer cover in place

Thanks for all the input. I gues I`ll try and find a silcencer cover. Does anyone know if this unit is year specific or are there other years that might also fit? Now back to my biggest worry, seperating the lower end. Both carbs have been removed along with the bell crank. Now looking at this with untrained eyes, only two things can happen, either I unscrew the barrel connector (releasing it from the shift rod) as I lower the bottom end, or as I lower the bottom end a splice in the shift rod becomes visible to me. There is no way the shift rod with the barrel connector connected, is going to pass through the bottom of the exhaust housing. the hole in the housing is the size of the shift rod 3/8 or 5/16. the barrel connector is probably 3/4 in dia. I`ve never done this before and i`m quite hesitant. I don`t want to get this thing half way out and then start having problems. I know someone out ther has got the ansewer for me. Thanks to all for helping a newb Roger

Thank you, I gues this part is getting as old as me, it`s also obsolete. Roger

The barrel swivel stays connected to the shift rod and will pass through the midsection.

Be sure to get all seven screws from underneath, including the one holding the trim tab and the one hiding above it.

Re: Can I run without air silcencer cover in place

Hi, Roger

I don't know if I can help or not but I have the same engine you do and I am in the middle of replacing all of the seals, impeller, etc in the lower unit. To free up the shift rod, I disconnected it from the connecting pin located directly underneath the carbs. After removing all of the other bolts that ezeke describes, the lower unit came right off. In mine, the tube that the shift rod is in is plenty big enough for the shift rod to go through along with the fitting at the top of the shift rod. I just measured that tube on mine and it's over 1" inside diameter.

If you want, I can try to take pictures of mine if that would help.

Try Twin City Outboards located in Shakopee, MN. They have a "mountain" of relatively new to very old outboards and parts.
