Hi all,
Longtime lurker here, first post on the forums. Found some other info on this forum that really helped me with my project boat, but now I'm stuck.
First, a bit of history. I'm sort of a project junkie. I'm a Java developer by day, but at night and on the weekends I tend to accumulate stuff to work on. I bought an old house to restore, an old 84 Honda motorcyle, an 88 Toyota Supra, etc...so I'm pretty well versed in tinkering and generally can get my head around the mechanicals of things.
Recently, I got a hold of a 1977 Tri-Sonic with an OMC engine/outdrive. The boat wasn't in the water last year before I bought it because the previous owner had problems with the starter and never got it fixed.
Long story short, the shop he took the starter to for a rebuild went out of business and he never got it back. So I don't have a part number from the original to cross reference.
The boat has a 190 OMC V8, which is a Ford motor. I called a local dealer that I was told are "experts" in OMC motors, and they said they can't get a starter any more, but gave me a Ford part number to cross reference, which is D8FF1101DA.
I called up my friend who manages the local auto parts store, and he looked up that starter. It says it's a counter-clockwise rotation starter. So, I looked up a marine cross-reference and ordered a replacement; however, the replacement starter that I ordered doesn't fit in the block and appears to have the wrong tooth count for the flywheel. The teeth on the flywheel are really fine and close together and the teeth on the replacement starter I ordered are large and coarse.
So next, I went to Overton's and used their Sierra part look-up to find out what starter they recommend for that motor, and cross-referenced the OMC part numbers they gave on Google. I'm seeing in the search results that the same part numbers they give are recommended for both CW and CCW installations and now I'm really confused.
So, at this point I'm completely stumped. Can somebody give me an idea of what replacement starter I need to find for this boat? Is it CW or CCW rotation?
