Hi all ! I got a 1979 80hp merc. 4cyl. 2 stroke. I got fuel squirtin out from under the round fuel pump cap that has the debri screen under it. I replaced the o-ring in May and leak stopped. Now it's back again and this time even worse. I replaced the o-ring again with no success.
I looked for a replacement cap but can't seem to find an exact match when I look at the decription diagrams. Some of the pics lack definition so its hard to tell if the part looks the same.
Who can help me out ?? Thanx!

And if that is the part number then the Item currently is out of stock at all Mercury warehouses. Estimated availability date is 29-JUL-2010.

Check the cap for cracks. Sometime turning the center screw too tight will cause a hairline crack in the cap. I seem to remember that the o ring that fit the supply on a Sloan flush valve was the same size and that I used one on several occasions as a replacement. They were butyl rubber and held up for at least one season. Cleaning the screen and replacing the O ring on my '76 850 was on my list of normal things to do before my first time out in the Spring.

I have pretty much the same engine that you have, and I've had some issues with keeping that cover sealed as well.

The Mercury part listings that I've seen (even at the dealer) just points to the part and says "O-Ring". That's it. No part number, no size.

I'm lucky that I have a NBR (Non-Boat-Related) supplier in town here that was willing to figure it out for me. He came up with a part #2-217

1 3/16>1 7/16 > 1/8

When first installed it works fine and I have made it thru a season with one. Sometimes. Other times it just starts leaking and I go and get another.

I've often wondered if whatever Mercury sells would be any better. But my boat shop guy just turns me away and says go bother the other guy.

Hope this all helps,

Chuck

Try to use the correct part if possible,( unless of course you want to impress your buddies with an engine on fire), standard rubber orings (buna-n/ nitrile) from napa, harbor freight, ace hardware, etc. wont hold up to fuel. You can punch up the correct stuff from several marine parts places and just order it for $1.34 or so.

If you know somebody at a good local marina they can throw it in an envelope and ship it for .50 cents. I've had '0' problems finding the correct oring.

Its just as easy to install the right part as the wrong part.
