Hey guys,

I just changed the water pump on my outboard and after getting the shift rod connected and trying to shift into and out of gear, the motor is not in sync with the throttle and the shift cable itself seems to be sliding in and out of the rubber holder which is preventing it from shifting gears.

Is there something that I forgot to re assemble that holds the shift cable in place so the motor shifts without the entire cable sliding or is that the normal function?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Do yourself a huge favor and order the factory service book.

The end of the cable sheething should lock into the trunnion block where it enters the hood. You may be missing parts.

It is a pretty simple setup, there is an inner and outer cable (of course) the inner cable is attached to the gear lever in the engine and the throttle lever on the control box, the outer is fixed via a plastic "stopper" that fits into a notch on the control box, and an adjustable plastic runner "nut" on the motor end, this is held in place by a simple metal retainer that is held in with a small bolt/screw, perhaps you have not reconnected that correctly or it has somehow slipped out.
