Merc shift cable plastic guide?

Replaced badly frayed lower shift cable. Saw a black plastic clip sliding
back from the housing, motor side, not installed.
And a new one in the kit. Have read it is a guide, how do I install
without pulling the motor? Should i bother?

also, PO removed shift assist and I found it in a box. Installed and makes
it hard to shift/easy to find neutral. Is that normal? I removed again.

Now it shifts like factory, docking nightmare is over :)

Probably a bushing to prevent chaffing somewhere.

Not sure what you are saying.

Is this an Alpha you are working on?

Are you are saying you now have no shift interrupt switch connected?

Sorry, yes alpha gen2; i meant with the shift assist (spring loaded shock?)
connected, it is harder to push into fwd or rev and easier to find neutral.
So i also removed it like previous owner and it shifts fine.
I don't mean the y switch, that is connected.
Just wondering if the assist will cause more problems with the controller
as it has to overcome the spring force.

cadet here, terminology may be lacking

Okay. Now I understand. If the shift assist doesn't help, then don't use it. From my understanding, its main purpose is to help you get to neutral. If it is hard to shift with it, I would leave it off. It certainly isn't necessary.
