another winch issue.. just checkin

my boat is a VIP valiant.. 2670pds
the trailer came with a Shelby 1700 pd 5:1 ratio.. 5407 model

I went to the local marine parts store and picked up
a Shelby 5404 1200pd 4:1 ratio winch...

The guy that ran the place said all I needed was a 900pd winch for
my boat.. and he had a couple fultons for 32 bucks.. just didnt seem
logical to make that large a move in size... Im uncomfortable as it is..
Hoping the 1200 will be enough.. the physical size difference is noticeable..

the old one was warped and rusting... the strap was popping and dry rotted. so it was time.. and the new unit looks to be well built and its zinc coated.. not painted like the old one.

what do you think.. am I ok.. or am I going to be having an arm strain.

If you use the winch to pull the entire weight of the boat up onto the trailer then it should match. Under normal conditions you are pulling a partially floating boat and once its loaded all the straps and bunks combined keep it on the trailer. My biggest concern when I buy a crank winch is the quality of the gear and latch mechanism. I have had the cheap ones fall apart under load. The winch and strap may have held the weight but the other parts didn't do to well. I think if you got a quality product you will be good.

yeah.. i think shelby is a good product.. well.. its at least made in USA...

the other one was the original from 1997.. it took a whack or something the bottom mount plate was bent making the unit tilt to the left.. still worked.. other than cosmetics it would of lasted for awhile longer.. the strap however would not have.. it too was the original.. the boat sat off the trailer for 10 years on a boat lift.. so the trailer saw little use.

If you're in a coastal area (salt water), I would recommend going to a better coating than zinc... just my opinion, but the zinc-plated winches start rusting at the gears because of the high amount of friction wears the coating off. EDC does better, but ultimately a stainless steel winch would be ideal.
