'96 Force Trim Not Working

I have a new and unusual problem with my newer used boat. After installing a Fish Finder recently I have had problems with my trim.

The trim seems to have a mind of its own. It will trip up when ever it so pleases. I originally attributed this to the interference from the fish finder cable that I ran by the throttle. Or the fact that I mounted the deep cycle battery for the finder/trolling motor under the driver side dash.

Yesterday I went to garage to check the carb. I put the throttle wide open(key in off position) and immediately heard a continuous "clicking" noise from hydro pump. Lasted about 10 seconds. I looked at carb and attempted to trim motor back up and nothing! No noise, just nothing.

I have had the fish finder completely disconnected from the bat for about a week and problems have persisted.

Any ideas on how to trouble shoot this??? Never heard of this before and I am dumbfounded. Maybe new hydro pump?

Sounds like a switch problem.Make sure the connections are tight. The finder install probably had nothing to do with it.J

When you say a switch problem, are you saying the switch in the throttle for up/down?? The wiring coming off that is a bunch of garbage. That could easily be the problem.

I'll take a look at it tonight and post what I find.

Thanks for the response!

James, mine is doing same, but in other direction. She'll just trim up whenever she pleases. Usually I would just giggle the throttle handle and it would stop. Now that I know they are on separate relays, I'm gonna check those tonight. It is a little troublesome that neither are functioning now though. Hope the problem didn't cause another!

Re: '96 Force Trim Not Working

relays require power to turn on trim motor. The spring inside constantly pushes the relay contact to ground so that if a relay breaks the motor does not run. In a similar fashion trim limit switches tend to creat open circuits when they break and the trim system ceases to function in any direction.

What this means to you guys is that the problem is probably an intermittent short that powers up one of your trim control wires. The most likely culprit is the wires under the dash near any moving objects that might wear a hole in the insulation and allow a trim control wire to become energized. The second most likely culprit is a worn out trim switch.
