The issue here is not that I'm not willing to spend money, it is simply that I heard it is common practice (and I have enough sense to check first) AND as I am in the UK, getting parts takes a good two weeks and with tax, costs a lot more than you guys pay - so its worth asking!

Anyway, thanks for all the constructive comments - which were certainly extremely helpful and appreciated. None of the gaps are bigger than the allowed amount, so I'll assume they are fine. I also assume this is not the problem as I'm sure some slightly weak valves would not be causing all the issues I have.

I will now clean and rebuild a third set of carbs and I'll leave these ones in the cleaner for a lot longer and see if this makes a difference. One interesting thing is how dry the engine is inside. I'm thinking I have a fuel issue now!

At the very least, I can rule out valves and timing (all done and checked a hundred times), so it only leaves the fuel (I obviously have great compression).

Thanks again folks.

I have left these in thinners for a few hours and they came up nicely. I ran both a wire and an air line through all the holes and they seem fine now. The old ones, although cleaned when I put them on, are full of crap already (maybe the problem), so I'll add even more fuel filters inline now.

I should be able to install them tomorrow but had enough today. Its a long job stripping it all down again - 4 hours anyway.

Mick, I think you're on the right track with cleaning the carbs. Your reeds don't sound all that bad. If you stick a float needle it'll flood the idle circuit in that carb and that sounds like what's going on.

If you adjust your floats wrong the bowls could also overfill and flood the idle circuits.

The first thing you need to do is find out where the gunk is comming from and fix that problem. You may need to drain your tank and get it cleaned.

You could keep adding more filters but that doesn't fix it, it just gives you more points of failure. One good fuel/water separating filter is all you should need.
