I just purchased a boat a couple weekends ago and i went to change the prop on it, 1994 OMC cobra (5.8efi) and when i did inspection i found this small rod laying in bottom of outdrive where the prop bolts on? does anyone know what it is or where it came from?

it ran and drove fine this past weekend but i seen the prop had a little bit of "rock rash" so i was going to get it rebuild and now i am stressed out about what i found?

CAN ANYONE HELP?????

in a typical installation you have the manifold, the riser, a connecting hose to a 90 deg dump, then another hose connection to the top of the Y pipe.
right in there, loosen all the clamps, you push the rubber down for access and it sits in slots or rubber inserts

well i bet it sounds alot easier then it truly is but i will give it a shot, i guess the most important part is finding the shutters i would guess , when doing some reasearch i seen that the shutters are not required on the king cobra, have you herd of anyone running without them, what are the risk involved?

i just went out and looked and are you talking inside the engine bay or at the outdrive? how would the rod get all the way to the prop , i know that is the exhuast exit but its hard to believe that it would make its way that far?

The Y-pipe is right behind the engine. Take the outdrive off and you will probably find the shutter sitting in the top of the outdrive. That is where I found mine when I took the outdrive off last fall.

Ishopmarine.com has a good breakdown of all the exhaust and cooling parts.

WOW pulling the outdrive, sounds scary? i have worked on cars my whole life but this whole boat thing worries me- is pulling the outdrive a big deal or is it just sound overwhelming? what all gaskets would i need as i am sure i would need something if i was to pull it apart to keep water from seeping back in?

check to see if the shutters are in the Y-pipe first, if they are in place I would not worry about it too much. The PO might have dropped it down the Y-pipe and didn't retreave it. If the outdrive has to come off they are simple to pull, will only take about 15 minutes.

You want to make sure the shutters are in place so the engine can't ingest water (hydrolock).

Re: Changed Prop and found this rod ???? can anyone help???

ok guys i pulled the outdrive and found nothing in the y pipe, then i puled the exhuast and found one side to still have pin but no shutter- other side everything was gone explaining the pin i found- i picked up all the new parts today but the problem is that i guess thru the last 15 years the holes where the bushings and pins slide into have become oblong and look somewhat "melted?" the shuttlers they gave me are oval but the pipe they go in is perfectly round- so i am somewhat confused? are the shutters suppost to close of completly? pls help as i am in limbo untill i can get some good advice?

one more thing- is there a chance the shutters passed on threw the prop? i cant seem to find them?

i read a couple places that OMC/Volvo did away with the shutters when replacing y pipe so if i was to replace the y-pipe to get perfect bushing hole it would come with no bushing holes at all and they say do not use them as a service bulletin - i am so confused on this ?????

The shutters are oval shaped outside of the y-pipe, when you put them in, you fold them down. They sort of sit in there in the shape of a shallow-v, so that they close if water comes up through the drive leg (preventing water from getting to the engine), and they open and "flap" with the exhaust pulses coming out of the engine to let them pass. Basically a spring-loaded one way valve.

Merc shutters fold, OMC are oval and sit at an angle.

Dont worry about the worn holes unless they won't even hold the pins. The rubber coupler seals around the outside of them anyway.

Flappers go in with the long side angled down and it moves with the exhaust flow.

The shutters melt and get in this condition form running without water to the drive and therefor no water in the exhaust to cool rubber and plastic things.

they are so ob-long that they will not hold the shutters, so i put it back together without any shutters for now, my question is i looked in the y pipe at the outdrive and couldnt find the shutters, then i looked at the top and cant find them- would theu be stuck halfway down or would they somehome passed threw the prop?
