damaged shift shaft?

Replaced water pump and shift cable today. All went fine until re-installing the lower gear housing. Housing would go except for about a 1/2". I tried to use the bolts to snug it up but it became pretty tight and heard a little "pop" sound. I removed the housing and upon inspection noticed that my shift shaft didn't turn freely anymore. I'm afraid I damaged something in the gear housing. Anybody have any ideas?

I believe that I may have bent that part, it still shifts. Can a mechanically inclined person change that with normal tools?

Re: damaged shift shaft?

Looks like major PIA. I can count major mistakes I've made in my life (mechanical that is) on one hand..but this is number five. I guess I'll be making some special tools.

Thanks for your help.

Re: damaged shift shaft?

Talked with my local boat repair guy, he says "Ive seen alot of them that have stiff shift shafts, don't worry about it" so I put it back together and it shifts great! Freaked about about nothing i guess?
