I have a 98 VolvoPenta SX drive with a bad gimbal bearing. I've tried to read all of the similar threads and here is where I am:
I have pulled the drive, pivot housing, bellows... It looks like my gimbal bearing and drive bellows have exploded. The seal is still intact and there appears to be no damage to the bearing seating area. But, the edges of the flange on the gimbal housing are beat up. A few questions (this is my first DIY major surgery on an outdrive): 1.) can the flange be repaired - without replacing the entire housing. Only the part of the flange that connects to the bellows appears to be damaged, not where the bearing is seated. 2.) Is there any damage inside the seal (engine side) that I should look for due to the water intrusion/bearing damage? A finger inspection reveals only globs of grease in there. 3. Obviously there was a root cause to the damage. Damaged prop vibration or... besides aligning the shaft and checking the U-joint should I be looking for other damage or cause? Can I just replace the bearing, weld up the flange, close it up and hope for the best?
The damage was done during a week at Lake Powell (last week) so I am assuming that there is no long term water damage - rust... But then you know what assuming means.
Thanks!
