ok i have a 2001 four winns bow rider. it has a 4.3l engine in it. the other day on the water it was starting to run really high in temp so i cut it off and brought it in. i changed the impeller which was all beat up, flushed the hoses all out and put everything back togather. when i put the muffs on and started there was no water being sucked into the engine...i tried to put pressure on the muffs to get the water started but no luck. i took the hoses off the pump and ran water through the intake and exhaust with both working fine. i also wait a minute to get the temp up thinking maybe the thermostat was still closed but nothing. what could it be not letting the water get sucked up?

Did you put the water pump gaskets back in correctly? If not you will be blocking the water flow

yes the only gasket was a rubber o ring that wouldn't impede any water flow..thanks for replying so fast!

You sure you put the impeller in the housing in the right orientation? Fins bent in same orientation as the one you took out?

I guess this might not have been obvious if you say the old one was all tore up.

Was the impeller intact or missing any blades? Did you replace the complete housing or just the impeller?

well i read that with this particular pump that it didn't matter because it would right it self but yes once it wasn't sucking the water i took it out and reversed the way the fins were going..no change..

the impeller was missing blades thats why i flushed out all of the hoses. i just replaced the impeller. i inspected the housing and there was no damage(its a metal housing).

If there are impeller pieces missing from the old impeller they could be causing a blockage. Pull off the water hose at the first junction inside the boat. If you have power steering there's probably a cooler junction just about halfway up the port side of the engine. See if there's any debris in there. In fact if you think you did the pump right you can start the boat for a moment and it should pump like crazy right there. Should fill a bucket quick. If no, recheck your pump work.
If you are missing any impeller pieces you should probably disassemble as much of the cooling system as you can to check. And if you still don't find the parts take off the exhaust and look down to where it outlets to the propeller for the thru prop exhaust. There's lots of places for bits to stick.

I am guessing you might have that fin blocking a passage in the manifold somewhere. from what I have read and some horror stories. DO NOT attempt to put full hose pressure into your inlet and see if you can force water through the system. That's a sure fire was to push water back into exhaust manifolds and into the engine.

Frank,

What brand and drive do you have in your 4winns? Most newer ones I have seen had volvos. Not sure about 2001. Both Merc and Volvo might have been offered. I think some of the posters are assuming you have a Merc Alpha GenII.

Re: wont suck water, changed impeller already

Disconnect it from the power steering lines and water cooling lines and flush it out reverse flow..
