Hello, I have a relative that owns a nice old Evinrude E25RCCA. The gear shift shaft broke off due rust and never having been greased. See part #39 in this diagram:

I bought a replacement shift shaft and have it here with me. In a short while, I will be going to visit to attempt to replace the part. So before I go, I'd like any tips or input. I have not worked on this motor before and would like to know what to expect.

There appears to be at least an E-clip, couple washers, and a small bolt that must be removed from inside. To get to this area, I believe that I must remove each bolt #13 as seen in this diagram:

Then pull up and out everything above and including the lower engine cover. I believe that the exhaust will pull all the way out with it. My questions are:

- do I need to pay any special attention to the drive shaft, or will that just slip off and back on?

- is there anything else that must be removed to get to the inside part of the shift shaft?

- any tips, rules of thumb, things to watch out for, etc?

Thanks

If I am thinking correctly, you will have to pull the power head to replace the shift shaft.

Can anyone verify this? I would just like to have some idea before going over there in a week or so. It's sort of a one-shot deal because I'm moving soon, and I don't want to leave them with a disassembled motor if I can't get the shift shaft in or can't put it back together.

If anyone can just sort of describe the steps they believe are involved, it would give me some piece of mind.

As it turns out, I did not have to remove the power head. I removed 4 bolts and 2 nuts from inside, and 4 bolts from underneath to remove the whole engine. I had to pry a bit to break loose the gasket seal, but then it just lifted right out. The drive axle was no problem, that just slips right on and off. Several other parts had to be removed to get enough room around all of the nuts and bolts, etc, but nothing major or complicated. The motor is back together, tested, and running properly.
