I need to re-paint the lower end on my Suzuki DT50. I am considering using Rust-Oleum cold galvanizing compound as a primer. Label calls out that it is 93% zinc in dry form.

Is this a good choice of paint ? Will I need to take it down to bare metal or I can ruff up the factory paint and over coat ?

Forget the cold galvanizing ........ nothing will adequately stick to it as a top coat.

Rough up your old paint and prime with zinc chromate to the areas that have bare aluminum ....then top coat

I found Duplicolor's etching primer at PepBoys pretty reasonably in a rattle can.

this brings up a question or 2 ....

whats the diff between a self etching primer ( like EZ used ) and the zinc chromate primer?

after laying down a coat of zc does it still need to be sanded prior to top coat ?
.

oh and i finally found a place that will sell it in cans rather than spray bombs .... even get a gallon for like 86 bux which i didnt think was to bad depending how much you have to cover. also avail in 5 gal .. ill try to figure out a link

Hello m8s...

IMO.. ANY alum primer that is in the water should NOT be Primed or Coated with Anything containing metals ( IE Zinc Chromate ).

Lets take a step back..you have your Anodes on the drive for a sacraficial metal to corrode First ( depending on salt or freash .. zinc or mag..) .. now you want to PRIME your drive with Zinc ??? okies..

One more time ..

1. Remove all corrosion that you can by hand ( no steel brushes ).
2. Alumiprep
3. Alodine
4. Prime with underwater-non-metallic compatible primer ( mostly epoxy ).
5. Prep and paint.

IMHO there is no other way to prep/paint bare alum that goes underwater..

Just one other thing on outdrives..if you have metal of any kind in your bottom paint..then do not paint up to your drive. Leave a gap around your drive.

There is so little actual zinc in zinc chromate it will not have any effect. It's primary job is as a primer to allow other paints to stick. It will not conflict with any anodes.

Old school .........

wash down with vinegar
apply zinc chromate
Paint

The original poster is painting his outboard and the method I listed has been used for years w/o problems.

Vinegar is great stuff,

I almost forgot ?Back in the Day? We would wash down (fresh) Galvanized gutters with vinegar before we painted thier troughs with RED Lead (primer) prior to installation on homes.

The paint never peeled, even years later. Must of been the red lead...
