Flame Arrestor???????

Simple and probably dumb question but not a cadet for nothing here guys so here it goes. Want to replace my air cleaner. Here comes the question>>> can you use any air cleaner that'll fit like a car one? It's a 2 barrell Ford or...... do I have to get a specific thing???? Want to replace the whole thing not just filter cause it looks as if the filter and stuff is all one piece.

ya gotta use a uscg approved flame arrester.
an air filter won't do. it don't arrest the flame, should there be one. + is not uscg approved.

Paper air filters (like your car) have no place on a boat...and are not legal.

There isn't a big problem with air borne dirt on the water!

be careful.. usually there's no filter to a flame arrester. sometimes in aftermarket, but not usually.
if it's a fa, yes ya can clean it and blow it out. but if it's a air filter i'd suspect ya already have a air cleaner. which the uscg won't like if they pull you over. + it don't arrest the flame if there is one. this could make you boat go boom....

an oem mercruiser flame arrester for my '75 165.... i clean it with brake kleen and blow dry it with compressed air..

Yep, you don't need an air clean or air filter, as there is not dust on the water. You need a USCG approved one like the one Zig posted. If that's what you have, just hit it with your degreaser of choice, hose it out, dry it off, and put it back on.

ok just a piece of advice that was given to me, that is along the same thread. I was advised to swap out the flame arrester for a K&N filter, as it would reduce moisture in my intake when the vessel is not running. I was advised that the K&N also acts as a flame arrestor. may be this is what the OP has. or is this just all wrong.

That will only be true if it says on the top of the unit that it is "USCG APPROVED FLAME ARRESTER"

K&N Does make USCG APP flame arrestors, and if that's what you have your fine. The newer engine have flame arrestors that do sort of look they they are actual KN filters.

Ziggy you are the man. That's excactly what it has on it. Thanks for the picture thing cause that's what I can relate to as of now. If I can see it I know what i'm looking at. Terms dont really mean anything to me at this point cause I know jack about it. Learning though. Thanks again to all you guys who replied and helping me out. It's greatly appreciated
