Tapered bearing tight??

I know, not too tight but this is different. I have done bearing r&r a few times with no problem. This time, when I tightened the nut down to seat the thing, the wheel bound up hard. I did feel some clunks as I turned & tightened and thought it was seating.
I pulled the hub back off and found the bearing to be deformed. I got another bearing, took out & re-set the race, and tried it without the seal so I could see it. Same thing, hand tight and inner bearing binds up right away. What gives? Is the spindle pooched, bad race or what. Ideas please.
thanks CC

Strange! What the heck is a deformed bearing? Is there any signs of scoring or pitting? Maybe a mis-match between the bearing and race?

Yeah. Bearing was sort of crushed and out of round. I was winding it down w/ big pliers and I felt it clunk. For some reason, it got crushed. Bearing & race were from new mated kit and now the new (NAPA) bearing does the same thing. I don't want to wind it down and wreck this one also. Maybe the race is defective?

You said you re-set the race- Was that a new one or did you re-use the old one? Did you press it in straight?

Sounds like the race is in crooked, and if it is you'll need to replace it again after cranking bearings into it.

Sorry , I just re- read your original post- Are you setting the races by cranking the bearings into them , so they all slide into the hub at once?

I am setting the race with a soft drift but maybe that first one was cocked so I'll start over with a new & see what happens.
thanks to all. CC

There is a reason shops use a bearing press, not being harsh, just saying....

A little tidbit from another shadetree guy if you do not have a vise or press -
Get a couple pounds of dry ice from yer favorite bait shop- put yer races in there for a bit, then put them in when they are nice and cold... works for wrist pins as well as anything else that is an interference fit.

By chilling the races you DON'T have to drive them in as they will push in. To make this even easier, when your wife or significant other is not around, put the hubs in the oven and heat them up and put the races in the freezer (or dry ice). The hubs expand and the races contract so they will almost fall into place. By all means don't get grease in the oven or you will pay the price!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not fool around when ready to drop in the races. Things cool/warm quickly so get to it!

That works well, but I would use your barbeque grill instead. Even the cleanest looking used hub will reek of grease when you heat it up.

Well, I got a new race & bearing, drifted the race home and it still gets too tight before I can see the cotter pin hole. Axel shoulder worn? What?
thanks CC

Re: Tapered bearing tight??

Can you post a pic of your spindle with the race on it?

Is it all the way against the shoulder?

Are the new races the same thickness as the old ones?

Was the inner race easy to slide onto the axle?

Yeah. I'll try a picture.
The other side, (wheel), went on no problem, so I guess the race is the right one.
Thanks, CC
