Re: 1988 Evenrude/jOHNSON 140HP ENGINE STALLS

Ok I have another question 140 evinrude V4 if I'm looking at the motor from behind the boat, do you read the cylinders left to right like a book? #1 cyl top left, #2 top right, #3 bottom left, #4 bottom right? Is that how they are or am I totally wrong again. Any help is greatly appreciated. I tried moving the orange wires on coils like you told me, it started had a really low idle then died and I couldn't get it started again. I pulled the carb cover of and it had a puddle of gas in the bottom of the cover, I'm thinking I flooded it trying to get it started again. I feel like I'm going backwards , I had the motor running yesterday it just wasn't running good under load at full throttle. Now it wont start again. What luck, this motor would make a great boat anchor though!!

When you stand behind the motor you will notice that the cylinders on the right or starboard side are higher than the ones on the left.

The top cylinder is number one and they are numbered down from that in the order that they connect to the crankshaft. That is also the firing order.

evinrude 140 hp V-4 finally got it running, some people have told me about a quick start mechanisim that might be not disengauging, where could I disconnect or should I leave it alone, I have been told if it doesn't disengauge it could cause motor to run poorly under load at full throttle. where is it and how can i diconnect it ??? thats all thats wrong with the motor now it runs poorly at full throttle under load!!?? Thanks for all of everyones help. I MOVING FORWARD NOW INSTEAD OF BACKWARDS.!!

There are a lot of V4 140s, but only the big bore loopers 1988 and newer have QuikStart.

If you have it you definitely do not want to lose it.

The 1988 V4 140 is a big bore looper. It has 4 separate carburetors. The cylinder bore is 3.685 inches. The powerpack has QuikStart & S.L.O.W.

QuikStart disconnects automatically at 96 degrees F. or 1100 RPM, whichever comes first.

Ok thanks, it is a big bore looper than it has four carbs. But I was told if the quick start doesn't diengage the motor will run crappy! Is that true?

Read the FAQ files (top secret file).
See Joe Reeves timing directions, very simple.
Link is in my signature.

Hello Again

Well we have the motor running it doesn't die at full throttle anymore but it doesn't go past 3000 rpm. Removed the carburetors all four and discovered something I need help with . There are 2 jets (screw) that have the numbers 16 and 24 on them and there are two with 20 and 24. Question is which goes where someone etched 1R AND 2R on the 16 and 24 but since I had three mechanics work on it don't know if it's correct.

Any help greatly appreciated.
