just aquired a boat with twin 3 litre 130hp omc cobra stern drives .. the prop was missing on the lh or stbd drive.. the rh drive has a rh prop. I think I need a lh prop for the stbd drive (kind of hard to find).
When I shift both controls to fwd, both linkages on the engine side move in the same direction Is there a way to change the direction of the gear like in a Volvo stern drive where you just flip over a link inside the gearcase cover. Or is there another way to accomplish this?
I dont think it would be a good setup to run both props in the same direction as it would be harder to steer and manuver. I would love to hear some feedback on this ..Havent been able to find any installation instructions on
line Please advise

Re: lh and rh screws

Correct set up is for the port drive to have a left hand prop and the starboard drive to have a right hand prop....

The above information is correct.

Welcome to iBoats Forums. Here you will find plenty help. Don't hesitate to ask.

From what angle are you looking at the boat? You say lh or starboard drive. In that case you would be looking from the bow to the stern?

Port is PORT/RED/Left from stern forward. All SHORTER words then;

STARBOARD/GREEN/Right from stern forward. All LONGER words.

Helped me remember.

I always find it amusing/annoying that people will look at an engine (from inside the boat) and refer to the left hand side, when in fact, it's the starboard/right hand side of the engine. Doesn't matter which way it's looked at or even if the boat is upside down! the right hand side is still the right hand side.

Example: I assume you are in the USA.... what side it the steering wheel on? Does that change just because you walk from the front of the car to the back? I hear you all saying "of course not, don't be silly. The steering wheel is always (in American) on the left hand side." Exactly the same with a boat!

While I'm up here.... The front and back of a prop....   Don't know how many times I've wanted to slap someone who's looking at a prop on an engine and referring to the end closest to them as the front....

Ok, someone else want to stand on the soapbox for a while?

LOL! Chris, the first thing I hammered into my wife's head was to NOT EVER use the words 'left' and 'right' aboard the boat. Drives me crazy when people do that, too.

Port and Starboard, bow and stern, fore, aft and mid- they never change regardless of who's facing in what direction. No opportunity for misunderstanding. Get into a couple of tight spots that require clear and immediate communication, and you understand the need to use the correct terminology.

Re: lh and rh screws

depends on which drives you have.
mostly with the 3.0 OMC both turned to the right.
seen a bunch with no issues.
one of my customers has a 24 seacraft with twin 3.0 and alpha genII drives with no issues going offshore.
the cobra SX and the SX drives can be converted to LH but why?

Thanks for the responses. Duuh Of course the lh side is port ... guess i had a brain fart...
Ok, so I am convinced that it should be lh and rh screws and i dont know if it was set up that way before i got the boat... So assuming that it was not set up that way What is the proper way to set up the shift linkage Can it be done like in a Volvo with a flip of the link in the gear or what?? I have never been inside one of these gears.
Please advise

I've not seen many twins that had a counter-rotating drive from the factory. Maybe some of the new ones do ($$$$$$). Mine has factory twin RH drives. At some point, I'll replace the port lower unit with a counter-rotating one.
With a cobra setup, you might be out of luck finding a CR drive, if they even produced one.

Re: lh and rh screws

start the engine, put it in fwd gear, observe propshaft rotation, buy the correct prop.
as we STILL dont know what drives you have we cant answer any more.
OMC made about 4 versions of the stringer,a cone clutch cobra a dog clutch cobra and a JV drive labeled the cobra SX.

And whichever way the top of the shaft turns to is the rotation. i.e.CCW is Lefthand rotation clockwise is righthand rotation. And again ALWAYS from the blunt end (not the pointy end) of the boat.
