you'd be a better friend if you just told him WHY you didnt want him around...

Stop being so passive aggressive and tell him exactly what the problem is.

This is one of those sensitive situations where it's easy to give out advice on what the other guy should do, but damn hard to actually do it yourself. \

I can tell you from experience with both friends and relatives that this is exactly the reason why many alcholics go on for years and years with everybody putting up with their behavior: Because it's very hard to say to someone's face that they're a drunk and you don't like the way they act when they're drinking.

Personally, in this friend-of-a-friend situation, I think it's very difficult to know what to do. I think you're doing the right thing by just disengaging from him, but that doesn't take care of the situations where he shows up because your other friends invited him along. It's annoying as hell to have some loudmouthed drunk making a jackass of himself and I agree with your approach of your boat, your rules.

IMO, it doesn't do any good to try to be gentle or diplomatic with an alcoholic. My suggestion: Tell the guy straight out that until he is dry again for at least six months, he isn't welcome on your boat or in your company.

I'm blessed with a large number of alkies in my family, including two uncles and at least four or five cousins, so I speak from experience.

I had an almost parallel experience with one of my younger cousins who, for years, had an on again, off again, relationship with sobriety.

I finally told him not to call me again until he had been sober for at least six months and had a letter from his AA sponsor to verify it.

That was over two years ago and I haven't heard from him since. I also haven't had to put up with his drunken antics and his late night phone calls.

I sincerely hope he someday straightens himself out. But, until that time I can do without him complicating my life.

Maybe EVERYONE should wear a clown suit and consume gallons of alcohol..... once everyone is trashed you need to toss your keys overboard....... if you can't beat them ........ join them.

This one would be easy for me .... "hey bro, you're a drunk and I don't like drunks, so you are not invited on my boat or any function that I set up. Get sober and maybe we'll talk.

BTW, ever notice how obnoxious drunks who want something, always want to call you "bro?"

Buy good wine or good beer (Meaning brewdog or an other top brand) at least stuff that costs more than a bottle of vodka for a pint and make him pay for what he drinks (my private stock of beers costs more than 6 dollar a bottle no good getting drunk from that.
Average wine I drink (almost never because I cant afford) costs over 25 dollar.
He wont get drunk at that price

:)
If I was it the situation I'd use my dad's say while I was growing up..."While you live under my roof you will live by my rules..." So in your case it's your boat, your rules. If you say x number of alchol then that is it. I'll really pee off people here and abroad, I don't let anyone smoke on my boat.

I throw non smokers overboard.:)

Telling an alcoholic how many they may drink is like being just slightly pregnant.

They take a drink,
the drink takes a drink,
then the drink takes them...
and you're no longer talking to a human being.

Alcoholism is the only illness that makes people extremely sick who don't even have it.

If you want to help, offer to go to AA with him.

Maybe you have unknowingly driven him to drinking because you always wear that Morose, and Depressing Clown costume when you're driving your boat :D :) :D

Well, had a great day on the water yesterday without the drama.

I think he's gotten the clue as he told a mutual friend of ours that "Jeff was being shady"

That's fine with me... it was nice having drinks, but everyone just chillin rather then yelling and screaming.

I had that problem many times. It always seemed to work out one way or another. I use to drink, but now sober. One of the main things that has helped me is knowing how annoying people can be when they turn their drunk switch to on. Then I try to remember how I could have been annoying when I was drunk. Being sober for me is new along with getting new sober friends. Don't get me wrong as I still have many friends that do drink. I just stay away when they have their big parties. Good Luck Jeff. Things will work out............SS

Every girl likes to laugh :)

What's funny is I could have that group on my boat next weekend......but I'm not sure if I really wana deal with it or not. I'd rather someone else takes them out, then I pull up and have a good time

Just a thought- have you tried talking to him without the clown getup??

Could be that he's not taking you seriously while staring at your big red nose.
