I just picked up a chieftain mk IV. Its been out of the water for about 6 yrs. It was winterized well as we get cold weather up here in Canada. the engine cranks over but befor i start it I want to clean out the tanks. Is there an easy way of doing this. The boat was a fgresh water boat plying lake huron out of Port Elgin and Goderich. I paid $950.00 for it. There is a 24 ft chieftain sitting in Tobermory at the tip of the Bruce , right where you make the turn to go to the ferry, on the right hand side. I never got a chance to stop as we were heading north, This was the 2nd week of July/10

Re: 24 chieftain mkiv

thanks, any suggestions as to what I should keep an eye out for would be greatly appreciated. I also have a 1959 12 ft crestliner jetstreak which I hope to hook up as a dingy. I have a preference for tin boats .

I'd say the motor should be priority one. Getting that up and running would be key! Checking for cracks, leaks, milky stuff, green stuff, ooozing stuff, bad bellows and on, and on...

By the way, what do you have for a motor in there?

After that I'd take a close look at the transom and check for any rot or soft spots. Be sure that wood is in good shape.

From there check the deck for rot and soft spots.

After that, everything else!

Post up some more photos for us to take a gander, eh!

Cheers!

Jetstreak very nice boat and Welcome. I do not know about your tanks but check out the threads on the Chieftans. I am sure you will see how the tanks were installed and get a good idea of what you may want to do. These boats are kinda famous for the wood rot so if yours wasn't re done I would check all that out as suggested. Then check the wireing, engine, etc. If you are not sure of the tanks you could always use a portable tank temporarily. Keep the pics coming and good luck.

It has a 165 mercruiser , the oil is clean , can't see any leakage, of any sort. I will post some more pics as I take them. I had to cross the solonide to get it to turn, Wondering if it could be a safety switch issue.

NOT a OMC Stringer and NOT a 470, Amen!

The fellas over on the IO side of things can surely give you a hand, they rock...

you could have the same issue I have: squirrel-chewed wiring harness. get a tester and start checking each wire for continuity.

Those are rare finds, wish my 21' cheiftain was a 24'. Couple things to check out would be water pump (outdrive), check transmon for rot, grease u-joints, grease check engine coupler for wear, change billows, water hoses, check/replace all fuel lines, check fuel tank for water, make sure you have a good spin on fuel filter/water separater, check gimble bearing. Trailer bearings and I am sure there is other.

Where do plan on sailing that big rig. Ocean, lakes.
