The 89 Johnson Tracker motor on my new to me boat. The motor states it is oil injected but is not now. The previous owner told me he runs a 16 to 1 ratio. That mixture equals 8 oz of oil to 1 gallon of gas. Does this pretty rich?

While doing some investigation while searching for a boat I picked up on several boats that had problems with the older injector oil systems so most premix their fuel.

There's been no 16:1 engines as far back as I can remember and I'm closing in on 60. Your engine is 50:1; 1 pint oil for 6 gallons of regular gas, 1 quart for 12 gallons.

I vaguely remember 24:1, maybe in the early 60s? It's been 50:1 for all outboards since the mid-late 60s. Makes me wonder about the guy you bought it from???

Hmmm, I wonder if he somehow was telling you 16:1 meaning 16 oz oil to 1 tank of gas (tanks are usually 6 gallons)? that would be bizarre, but it's the only way I can imagine it makes any sense at atll.

Actually he was saying the mixture on the oil label is 8 oz to 1 gallon of gas.

The fuel tank is approx 27 gallons it runs the width of the back of the boat. Tracker seems to think everyone is a tournament fisherman running miles on big lakes to fish / lol

How the heck does it run at 16:1? I would imagine it doesn't run very well and smokes like a chimney burning green wood?

Re: fuel/oil mix

I am trying to get a 1957 Johnson FD-11 running and I have 2 questions. The first is about the pressurised tank. When first starting a engine that has had the Carburator rebuilt, how does it get gas that first time before it is running. I can see how it works after the engine is running, but before that is a mystery. And I think that the oil mix on this engine is 24/1, but that was in 1957. Oil is a lot better today then it was back then and I was wondering if less oil was needed.
Thanks,
