shifting issues

i have had issues with my boat shifting in and out of for a while....i replaced my shift cable a few months ago...and have adjusted and adjusted and adjusted and cant find the sweet spot....basically its been a pain...i can hear it clickin like it wants to grab in gear and sometimes it does and some times it doesn't i can manually put it in gear and then am able to get it out of gear the normal way..same scenario with reverse....then sometimes when im trying to get it out of gear it almost feels like the cable is in a bind or something cause its very hard to go back and forth....

reverse interlock switch? along with improperly adjusted cables would explain both.
