Water in the Fuel Tank??

Hey all! Can't wait to get started in these forums! Okay, so the hubby and I bought an 87 Bayliner Capri with a Force 85 outboard. While we were out on the lake he put it into reverse (we didn't know there was a manual lockdown) and water got everywhere, including the gas tank (now we know to check EVERY TIME!)...When we run the boat in the driveway in a big water tub it starts up everytime and runs great, but as soon as we get out on the water it goes for a little while (say 20-30 yards) and quits...and doesn't start again. We think maybe water got into the gas tank, but don't know how to get it out. Syphon doesn't seem to get to very bottom. Any suggestions?

dose it just cut off? if water in tank it wouldent run. I think it need to be retimed, this must be done in the water (river or lake).

Sounds like you have a timing issue. Make sure to do it in the water not on a set of flush cups because it needs the back pressure on the exhaust.

Hello,
I'm not to sure about Capris but on my Ebbtide I can manually remove the gas tank. If you can too, this would be your best option plus you can remove any debris that may have collected over the years. Good luck.

Interesting, perhaps I can expand on this. When its out of water and the engine dropped in the water tub, it runs beautifully, doesn't quit, doesn't jump..nothin, it just RUNS. So we took it out on the lake today, it had a hard time starting but when it did, it ran for a lil bit then quit and wouldn't start again.

As an update to this, we siphoned out the gas (again) into a glass jar and saw that there was some water seperation. So he's emptying it jar by jar until all the waters gone.

That being said, do you think water could have been the problem? Or do you still think its timing? and how do you check timing issues?

I believe that you have a timing issue..If it were from the fuel it would be a problem all the time. Bad fuel will cause the engine to run rough all the time.

TIMING, when there no load it will run good, but when there is a load (in a waterway) it a diffrent story. you check the timing with a timing light. just like a older car.

Yes you have to be out in the water. You need back pressure on your exhaust and have the engine under load..
