So my wife is a full time worker as a care giver at the local senior center. I am working full time painting houses and working construction. My wife has been researching work from home opportunity's that are legit. We know there are a lot of scams out there and have to be very careful. We have 2 kids and she want's a work from home job to be able to spend more time with them. Does anyone do this? Does anyone know of any legitimate jobs? Not looking for a get rich quick, but she just has a desire to spend more time at home.

Just thought i would ask.

Tele commute???
maybe some data entry stuff,
Or do peoples reciepts up for them IE weekly, monthly, quarterly, year end.
(you have to keep track of paper work for the tax man)
Then there is the ugly ones, babysitter, dog sitter ETC.

Ex DIL has been running a daycare center out of her home for many years. She isn't rich, but she pays her bills.

She says it is a lot easier than geriatric care.

Phone answering service for some "on the go" "on the road" businesses that need a professional answering service rather than talking to someone through a bad signal in the middle of a job site that can not answer what you really need from where they are.
My 2 cents.

Our friend across the way works from home for FTD processing flower orders for over 10 years now. She enjoys being home and she makes the payments for her two son's college, removing the burden from her husband who already works 12 hour days for the local utility.

Start a small internet based business, either retail, or selling a product she can make.

The Admiral does medical billing at home. You have to have a very understanding boss to do that though. Her's works out of his house and helps raise his grandchild from there so he had no problem w/her doing the same.

She is doing an online class for medical transcription right now as a Plan B. That'll set you back about $3500 + a computer though.:(

Eventually. Like most careers pay starts out modest but will increase with her skill level. It's no cake walk. I've listened to a few of her practice doctor's recordings and I don't know if I could do it. These guys speak like they write. She employed the help of my SIL who is an RN and SHE couldn't figure out what this one guy was saying... and he was an American. The next session is on foreign doctors!

Re: Work from home job's

My wife was a career girl when we stated having kids. After two of them, and the stresses of daycare, we decided that one of us would stay home with them. Well my income during this time had risen to the point where it was obvious that I had greater earning potential and we decided that she would stay home.

To do this, she wanted to have some part time work to get her out and dealing with adults. What she found was a job with an aupair agency as a commuity coordinator. This was work she did out of the home, was extremely flexible and her income really responded to what she put into it. Most of the hours were scheduled apppointments on evenings and weekends and most of the work was phone related. She was responsible for managing the relationships of aupairs and families and being a local contact for the aupairs.

This was 15 years ago and today she is a regional manager which is a full time salaried position managing the area directors in several different regions. The job has grown as our kids have grown and now with kids almost ready to go off to college, she is positioned very well to transition from full nest to empty nest. Although the empty nest is still 10 years off..

My nephew used to type in the closed caption text to be displayed on television shows. He mainly did fishing and outdoor related shows. They would send him an audio file and he would listen and type. He would then send it back to the show's producer (or someone). I think that he only did 2 or 3 per week, but it paid something like $50 per show. So $150/week was not bad for a college student.

Glad I came across this. I'm hoping to retire within the next couple of years after a career with the state, and will need a second career (part time, I hope) to make up the difference until the kids get out on their own.

I've been looking into Medical Coding training. From my (so far) limited research on on-line training, it looks pretty difficult to find real good quality, legit and affordable courses/schools. If you Google a specific program and add "reviews" to your search terms, you can often come up with people's real opinions on the specifics. Granted, there are a lot of "victim-complainers" out there but it's usually pretty easy to spot them.

I think I'd do better in a brick-and-morter class, so I am leaning strongly toward a 14-week course at the local BOCES (cost =$1600) that qualifies you to take the certification exam. After that, you can get a Medical Coding Apprentice certificate and apply for entry level work. As mentioned above, as time progresses, the salary can get pretty good. I'd be terrible at Medical Transcription because I am terrible at understanding people with accents and fast speakers. Age...??:D

There are several hospitals and clinics locally with those jobs. I haven't found any local places that permit working from home though. But I'm sure I'll be wanting to get out regularly anyway.
