Pull the leg again and make certain the water tube is not pinching the little rubber grommet at the pump housing. Also make sure the little pin is in place that locks the impeller to the shaft. Many report an overheat when in fact they just don't have enough water in the barrel to let the pump prime properly. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: 85 4hp overheating

Thanks Rick for responding. The water tube was in the rubber boot, I doubled checked. The water exaust was like a fine spray from the 6 holes and not very hot. This is the same as the with the old impellar, maybe a little better. I took my air compressor and tried to blow thru and it still got hot. Could Ihave the impellar turned the wrong way? Is there an exaust hole at the block? Thanks George

Well your doing things right then. My next step would be to pull the head and leg and connect a garden hose to the water tube and see if your getting any flow at the head where you should be. You might have a blockage in there somewhere and the extra pressure might break it free. You might have to dig around to assist it to come free. No thermostat in an 85 is there? If there is you should pull it and test it. Mine is a 71 and it has none. Rick.

I dont't think there is a themostat in it. My buddy told me I need a bigger barrel to run this in my driveway. he said the exaust holes should be at the waterline or deeper. I am going to try this when I get home. Thanks again George

Sounds like a good plan. By the way, even if you put the impeller in with the vanes the wrong way they would correct themselves within a couple of seconds of run time. Rick.

Thanks Rick for the advice, I was glad to get it. The bigger barrel did the trick but my hair still stayed a little grayer. I ran the motor for 30 min at half speed and it ran great. Thanks again Rick. George
