I went and looked at a 1992 Bayliner Capri. It has a 115hp Yamaha outboard on it. The boat is in good condition and has minor scratches but nothing major and only stuff expected with age. The vinyl all looks really good and just needs a cleaning. The trailer is in great shape (not an ezloader) and has new tires. He is including skis/tube/ropes/anchor/prop/bow cover/boat cover/bimini top/paddle/buoys. He's asking $4,700 but said he would take $4,500. I see nada is saying its only worth between $3,100-$3,500. Does that sound about right or is the $4,500 a better idea.

Re: Purchase? 1992 Bayliner Capri

When I was looking for boats in my area (dallas,tx) NADA was never remotely close to what people were asking/getting.

Read NADA notes very carefully. sometimes it will include trailer price, sometimes it won't. sometimes you have to add in motor, sometimes, not. I do not trust NADA values on boats.

You didn't say what length boat but I am going to assume around 18ft based on the 115HP motor. That boat would go for around $3k-$3500 in my area.

IMO it is ABSOLUTELY critical for folks asking about boats and prices to state where they are located. Prices for boats vary WILDLY by region. Opionions on price have to be considered relative to the region, so please tell us where you are located.

Next, as mentioned, what size Capri?

NADA is almost hopeless as a guide for boats. Condition and regional demand are everything.

Personally, for a Bayliner of that vintage, in the MN/WI region, at $4500 I'd say the seller has been overcome by 2 stroke fumes. He'd be lucky to get $3k here because these boats are common as dirt and have a ahhhh-heeemh, so-so reputation when it comes to build quality.

More info will get you a better feel for your region.

Regarding boat prices, condition matters a lot. Most sellers think their boat is worth more than NADA.

It's worth what you are willing to pay. The price you are quoted seems high to me for an 18 year old Bayliner.

Carefully check the floor for soft spots, run the engine on muffs, then take the sea trial (a good long one) before spending any money on a used boat.

Good luck.

Re: Purchase? 1992 Bayliner Capri

The boat is in Milwaukee WI. It is in very good shape for its age. The thing I like most about it is that its got the Yamaha outboard on it. The original owner had a 120 Force and gave up on it after a couple of years. I am going back to get more info on it specifically but I'm having a hard time finding a 17-18ft bowrider with an outboard other than a force. He is above nada but inline with the market and hes including all the extras. I may try to talk him down to $4k but I dont think he's out of line asking for $4,500. The floor does not have any soft spots and the motor runs like a dream. Havent taken it on the water yet but thats the next step. Just wanted to get some other thoughts. Thanks guys.

I find it that you can't really go by NADA as often as one would think. I have a buddy with a Hitchhiker 5th wheel that NADA quoted to be worth between $13-15,000.00 and on craigslist the same year with 2 slide outs where priced between $6-7,500.00. I have seen it go the other way just as wildly. Bottom line it is only worth what someone is willing to pay. If the boat is that clean, runs good, you will be happy for a long time with it-BUY IT.

Price for the boat $4,500.00-Upgrades $1,000.00-fun on the water with your family PRICELESS.....

I still think $4500 is way too much for an 18 foot Capri in almost any region.

It comes down to what you value more, time or money? I'd be willing to bet he'll still be sitting on that boat in a month's time if he won't take about $1k less than he's currently asking. Question is are you willing to wait him out, or is it worth overpaying to get on the water quickly?

Other question I'd have is why are you keen on an outboard for that style of boat?

In Canada, I am willing to pay $3000.00 for this 115 Hp Yamaha only. This package is just a bargain. It could be sold within an hours if it was put on local ad.

If the motor and boat are in great shape, it sounds like a deal to me. You dont see too many of those 90-92 Capris. They have a nice line, and look better than the new bayliners i think.

without seemingly bashing bayliners......(i own one and have just totally re-fit my hull including scooping tons of wet foam and rotted wood out)

i would highly suggest that you weigh the boat. and compare it to factory specs. this will be a great indication to any possible problematic areas in the hull....

i think he is over priced....but if its a garage boat with little hours....it is well worth the money.
