59 qd-20 water pump question

I have a '59 Johnson QD-20 engine that I recently just did some maintenance on. I replaced all the ignition parts (had one cylinder that was not firing at all).

While running the motor in a tub I noticed that the shaft seemed to get quite hot, yes I know that's where the exhaust is, and that there was no water coming out. Should this motor have a "pee" hole or have water come out with the exhaust?

I'm going to pull the lower off and replace the impeller, don't know if that has ever been done. Any tips on making sure everything is sealed up correctly?

Thanks

Make sure the water level in the tub is well above the water pump. The water pump is just that, a pump, it will not suck water worth a darn.

just did that, same yr and engine, remove the cover plate on the leg to seperate the shift rod, its straight forward. my impellor was in bits.

don't lose the steel pin that locates the impellor to the shaft.!

Daviet - Pretty sure I had the water high enough.

What kind of sealant/gasket material do I need to re-seal everything back up once I replace the impeller?

Re: 59 qd-20 water pump question

OK, got the old pump assembly apart, the old impeller was in pretty bad shape. What I can't tell is what is supposed to get a seal and what is not, and what should it be sealed with.

I hat the "top" which is the impeller housing, a thin piece of metal, then the lower unit of the motor. It looked like there was a seal between the lower unit and the metal plate, but nothing else. I would have thought there would have been a seal on both the top and the bottom of the plate.

Any help is much appreciated.:D

Right, I've seen that. What I need to know is there any sealant material that goes between item 9 & 12 or 12 & 13.

I would think there should be, but I couldn't tell when I took the assembly apart.
Thanks

You should clean up the area between the plate and lower unit, and apply some kind of gasket sealant. It really doesn't much matter what kind. Nothing else is needed from there on up.

Smear a bit of grease on the drive shaft splines, and make sure the o-ring is good. A smear of grease in the water tube grommet will make that slide together easy too.

Re: 59 qd-20 water pump question

ok, got it all put back together, put it in water and fired her up.

Quick recap. A few months ago I replaced all the ignition components, and replaced the float & needle on the carb. It was at this time I went to change the oil in the lower unit and found it to be about 1/3 water 2/3 oil. I replaced, at least I thought, all the seals gaskets, etc. in the lower unit.
Now after finishing up with the water pump - which worked this time. I STILL have a problem.
1) the oil in the lower unit is mixing with water again, I drained it after this test to find it carmel in color
2) I don't know why this is happening, but I'm getting a very thick layer of black oil in the water. In fact, on the panel that you remove to disconnect the shift rod from the lower unit, I was getting a thick oil/grease substance coming out.
3) I think this is in direct relationship to #2, but after draining the water from my tank, there was a black "sludge" coming from some of the water holes.

Ugh, I think this is getting beyond my capability, may have to find a shop in the area and take the motor too.

Sounds like exh carbon mixing with exh oil, they do run dirty.

Most shops will not touch older outbaords.

Did you use a new seal on the gear oil drainscrew?

Re: 59 qd-20 water pump question

Yes, I put a new seal on the 2 filler screws and one other one.

I'm thinking there is one seal I didn't replace, the one under the pump where the drive shaft goes trough. Ugh, it looks "fun" to replace too.

I've tried toget the bottom of the pump off the lower unit, but didn't want to break anything. Just how item 13 (bearing housing assembly) held on to the lower?

TIA

Re: 59 qd-20 water pump question

That is the part that I'm going to replace. Might just get one of the "kits" that has that seal plus a few others to have on hand.

Ugh, fun, I just LOVE takin' this thing apart again and again.

Also looks like I might have a very small leak where the very bottom piece (section where the gears are at) meets up the the upper piece. Maybe I used the wrong type of sealant along the spaghetti seal. What should I be using?

More background, and maybe a reason why it was so bad? When I first got the motor, I ran it in a tub, it worked, so I took the boat out fishing. I commented to my FIL that I seem to remember the motor having more power when I was younger. Fast forward to last fall, I decided since I'm not fishing I was going to working tuning up the motor. Come to find out it was only firing on one cylinder. That lead me to replace most of the ignition system. Pretty much everything except the plug wires. Now it's running on 2 cylinders again. Could all the carbon just be the excess oil in from the 2nd cylinder burning off?

Its kind normal at 25 to 1 oil in gas mix.
