Re: No ID plate?

Look for a welsh plug on the motor. The serial no. may be stamped in it.

On your engine, the serial # should be on the tilt tube between the thumb screws as seen from inside the transom.

What kind of blue stripe?? I'll add a few pictures of different blue stripes

Re: No ID plate?

On the front is a "mercury marine' decal. If the word 'marine' is red, it is a 1976 model. if the word 'mercury' is red, it is a 1977 model.

ok so the "marine" is red so that means its a 76 which is what i was guessing but still without a serial number i cant order parts....and is this motor (76 merc 850 supposed to have an air filter?

Re: No ID plate?

ok guys dont quit on me here....so we have decided that its a 76 but the only indication is the front plastic cover which now i know can only be replaced with a 76 style one because they dont make a replacement 77 so this does me really no good....and i have yet to be answered on the whereabouts of this so called welsh plug....i think maybe a call to mercury might be a better route

Mines a blue stripe and its a 73. There are no air filters on outboards cause theres no dirt on the lake. Normally there another ID on the engine block.
