smashed some rocks

I have a century 2600wa, last night i ran aground on some rocks at 35mph. the hull has an asortment of gouges and the worst is a hit that has damaged the fiberglass and left a dent the size of a cantalope. my question is for repairing the sections where the fiberglass is solid under the severly gouged gelcoat, what is the process for repair? the spot that is dented in, do i need to cut out the damaged glass and repair from the inside(hard to get at) or can i repair from the outside? is this a job for a professional only?

Pictures will help us to help you. Hard to determine the extent of your damage from just a description.

Hello Lee..

More then likely if your dent is as big as a fruit..then its an inside and outside glass job..

At 35 mph .. you can allmost tell us ( from moment of impact ). Sorry.. you can ask hoping that you hear the best case :) but ..

Pics .. aye.. Pro only.. depends..

From what I understand, you do not cut out the damaged glass.

Wow,
I'll bet that the whole story is very interesting and involved some refreshment. How did you manage to get that thing back on the trailer?
If you decide to repair it yourself you may be an expert before you finish.
I think you can do it with the help from the great folks here but you should do a search on the forum and do a lot of reading.
I would also do a search on the web "Fiberglass Repairs" which will get you a lot more reading material.

Good Luck
Bob

Man, how did this happen?

I agree with bobglasstream, Do a search and you will find a lot of info on fiberglass repair.

There is deffinetly some good fiberglass info in this thread. Although you may want to start drinking the coffee, cause you will be up a long time reading!

Good luck on the repairs, and keep us posted on what you decide to do.

We've all had our "boo-boos", but thankfully I haven't had one as bad. That will be an inside/outside repair, unless they can use hull paint to hide the gel-coat fix. I saw a great video on U-Tube about how they can fix things like that. Unfortunately it was from the inside. I guess thats what insurance is for...

Re: smashed some rocks

What amazes me is that I can clearly see an entire, in tact, prop on the port motor.

How do you get that far up a rock face, after going through that much shallow water, and still have an in tact prop? Pfft, how do you do that and not mangle the gear case / leg?

Oh, and fix that yourself? Without ever having any body shop or fiberglass shop experience? Well, having worked in a glass shop for 5 years, GOOD LUCK! :) I mean, a novice could fix the holes with a little research. But get it to look "good"? I dunno 'bout that! It could be done, but you've got a pretty steep learning curve there...

Hope everything works out for you!

Re: smashed some rocks

Thanks for the info, i hired a pro to do the job. FYI one gear case did get wrecked. I decided to save myself instead of the boat as I hit the floor and braced my feet to the front. Not sure how i didnt get hurt... i hit 3 trees, uprooted a fair sized cedar tree which broke half way up and landed on the other side of me.. I know it looks like drinking but its not,, i was looking for a song on my ipod,,(even dumber) one engine's throttle cables back off a bit and i think that is what turned me towards the point. I'm just glad that i'm not dead and i still have a boat. anyone have a counter rotating gear case for a Z200?

Glad to hear it wasn't an ARI (alcohol related incident). While this may have reminded you of a very important lesson I will state it for others benefit. Just because there are no lines on the water does not mean you can take your eyes off the "road". I am glad that the damage was limited to objects and your ego, though it hurts me to see such a nice boat injured by a need to hear some CCR :)

Re: smashed some rocks

THeres no tunes on my boat, I can see getting distracted by the GPS finder just as easy though. Looks like it went over those big boulders, major impact damage, I'd expect damage to stringers and safety pressure valves in the tilt/trim of the outboards besides the obvious.
