My 75 hp Yamaha outbroad motor will not go into neutral. When the shifter is in the neutral spot, it will start put in forward and it will move forward. It will not start in forward or reverse. But after I start it I can put it in reverse or forward and it will run fine. It just will not go in neutral at all, know matter what position the shifter is in. I took the cover off and it appears to be shifting correctly at the motor too. So I don`t think it needs to be adjusted. Could this be a lower unit problem. Any help would be much appreciated Thank U

Model # C75TLRT
The top of the shift shaft looks good no rust or corrosion. I trailer this boat so it never stays in the water. I did get it to go into neutral with the shifter, in between neutral and reverse. the first part of reverse on the shifter, but it is all most the back of reverse at the shift shaft arm slot. It will move a little bit farther back and go into reverse but not much.

Can the shift shaft arm be adjusted at the top of the shift shaft?

no adjustment at the lower.
inspect the shaft at the lower end not the upper.

Re: motor will not go into neutral

U were right rodbolt the bottom of the shift shaft is starting to hour glass. It still turn but I dont know how long it will last. The real problem i think is the plastic part on the end of the s shaft that goes over the gear shaft. Some of the teeth on the in side of it are striped. so I have to move the shifter a little farther to make it turn. Can the plastic part be replaced or is it all one piece. I would like to get a few more seasons out of the S Shaft if I can. Because all the things I have read says U have to remove the power head to change the s shaft and that getting the bolts out can be a nightmare.

Re: motor will not go into neutral

that plasic part is simply a guide.
the shaft is whats gigging ya.
keep playing and you will have a bad clutch, gear and still a bad shift shaft.

Re: motor will not go into neutral

Rodbolt I wasn`t talking about the guide, It was getting dark last night when I dropped the lower unit and the end of the shift shaft that goes over the gear spine was made out of a different metal and it appeared to be plastic. I am going to order a new shaft and attempt to install it.

Thank U for your help and patients:)
