Hi guys I am about to replace the transom on my small cabin cruiser...which has been previousley overboarded with ply then a slab of metal some foam and a bit of everthing else which was used to sandwich the said dead transom.
I knew it would be a mess when i bought it but.....
Anyhow I remember seeing a post where the transom was replaced from the outside but I cant find it .
I know the general consensus is to renew from the inside...but judging by the state of the exterior skin I think an outside replacement would be easier and preferable from my point of view.

Whats your thoughts pro's con's

Any help advice appreciated and taken on board.

Re: Transom Renewal from inside or out Dilema

Skinning the outside of the transom should not be a problem, technically. I have seen many repairs done from the outside due to bad cores. But there are other things to consider.
I think that most restorations, versus repairs, are done keeping the skin intact because the restoration almost always includes more than just the transom. On restorations removing the transom skin is not prudent because the hull gets gutted anyway.
Since you are concentrating on doing a repair on the transom specifically, skinning it may be the best way to go. It would be a good idea to do a thorough inspection of all the related cores so that you are sure that once you remove the skin you wont run in to any surprises. It would be a bad thing to find that removing the skin makes more problems than a solution. I know it seems that a repair done from the outside is easier than gutting everything. But once the skin is gone, its gone. Make sure that the other related cores will hold up to a new transom.

Older boat? definately do the inside job because the transom has to be glassed to hull sides. You'll find the stringers rotted out too.

Thanks for the replies...I mulled them over then cut from the inside.Im glad I did as the inside had 2 square wholes cut into it with a couple of pieces of roof batten shoved in for strength(the mind boggles) all convieniently covered by the crap sandwich.
Any how its out now, needs a bit more grinding and we will be ready to go.
There is not much room between the outer skin and the splash well ,its going to be a bit tricky....but I dont realy want to cut the splash out.
