Where can I mount my voltage regulator for a 1984 150?

I just received a cdi voltage regulator and I was going to replace my rectifier but the voltage regulator is a lot larger than the rectifier and I don't think I can mount it in place of the rectifier above the power packs. I read a post that described a location on top behind the flywheel cover. There are two posts that were used for the idle stabilizer that are available but again the holes don't line up. I would have to make a bracket and the wiring is a long way even with the pigtails so I would have to add wiring to make the connections.
I was wondering if anyone has come up with a good location for my year motor?

Make an aluminum mounting plate to mount on top. There's actually room there for 2 regulators. I put a 40 amp stator and flywheel, and 2 regulators on my XR4. Isn't room for the flywheel cover under the clamshell cowl, but otherwise everything fits.

hope it helps

Thanks John- any chance you can post a photo of your setup?

How thick is your aluminum plate?
Did you just screw down the plate on the mounting posts?

I'll have to take a picture and post it. Thickness isn't really critical. I believe mine is 1/4 inch. The plate is bolted to the engine with flat head screws, counter sunk to flush with the plate. The regulators are then mounted with 10-24 pan head screws and star washers. The mounting holes in the plate are threaded. 2 20 amp regulators nested on a plate that just barely holds them seem to run OK. I burned out a set of the early yellow ones, but when I replaced them with the black ones, I've had no other trouble.

Odds are they are cranking out full power whenever I move. One is rigged to the cranking battery, which runs all instruments, depth finders, and pumps. The other is rigged to the trolling motor batteries so it's feeding 2 Group 27 deep cycle batteries in parallel that are guaranteed to be partially discharged. When I quit, the trolling batteries are down, and the cranking battery is usually nearly topped off.

hope it helps

Finally got a snapshot of it.

Mounting is with 3 flat head screws to the engine, and pan head screws threaded into the plate to mount the regulators.
