The are for the "low oil" warning. There is a float switch in the tank. When it gets to about a quart or so remaining, it will trigger that alarm.

One of the wires goes to ground, the other to the warning signal wire (on mine it's tan).

Is this the original tank to the (1989, right?) engine? Maybe the alarm switch is just fouled or worn out.

The main thing I would think of is that the float switch in the tank is not working right, sending the alarm signal even though the oil is not low. That's why the alarm quits when you unplug the wires. If it was a problem with the alarm itself, that wouldn't help.

Why is it constant rather than intermittent? My understanding is that the float switch in the tank is the thing that sends the intermittent signal - in other words, when it "trips" due to low oil allowing the float to drop past a certain place, it trips intermittently, cycling off and on every 20-30 seconds. I'm therefore thinking that not only is the float messed up, but the switch itseslf is messed up. You could probably evaluate the float by pulling it and just looking and moving it by hand. The switch you'd have to check with a multi meter, seeing if it cycles or is a constant "on" when the float has triggered it.

For what it's worth, good new or used whole tanks or pickup assemblies are readily available on ebay and craig's list, not too expensive, and easy to install (ask here if you're unsure how to do it). Just make sure you get the right one. The switch (and therefore signal it sends) are different for the later alarm systems called "System Check". You could find it on the BRP website parts finder and probably other sources like maxrules?

Just another thought - could it be you have the wrong tank, was it changed recently, and if so, was it the right one for a non-system check alarm system?
