Hi,
Can anyone tell me what the timing should be set at for a 40EL71G S/N: 86788. Enquiring on behalf of a mate so I am not familiar with this engine type. Can someone post or link me to a picture of the power head.

Thanks.

Re: 40hp tune up help

Can someone confirm this engine has breaker points ignition and the timing is fixed?

tx61whaler, that is great.

I don't suppose you know what the points gap setting is? (.020 Maybe?)
Is the idle mixture screw best at 1 full turn out from lightly seated?

Thanks

Paul

Points gap is .020" if you don't have the special timing fixture to set them exactly. Note: "Timing" in this case means timing the points' opening in relation to the magnets passing the coils.

A turn out will get it going, but another half turn is probably better. You will have to readjust once running anyway.

F R,

I take it there is no marker on the crankshaft ( or taper) to line up the points armature with?

Re: 40hp tune up help

Just set them to .020". Good enough. No need to make it complicated.

F R That's what i like to hear.

The engine has been running poorly from what I have been told so we will establish spark for starters.

Thanks for the info!

Paul
