The u-joint could be hitting something......how high are you lifting it?

Re: Merc outdrive

I am a new boat owner, my trim limit didn't work when I purchased the boat. I have now replaced the switches after a bellows job, and I was shocked when I adjusted the trim limit to specs last night the limited range allowed. I never cranked the trim up and ran her at wot, but I know (now) the first couple times I loaded the boat on the trailer, I had the drive trimmed up past the specified limit. I heard a knock when I did this, thought something was wrong with my drive, only to find that the problem was me and my lack of knowledge for how far you can trim the drive. You may have a similar circumstance?

It's when I lift my leg to come into dock, so I lift it enough to see water splashing, and if I throtle up it will starts to ping, so would it possibly be a bad u-joint?

You cant raise it that high with the engine running. Especially while throttling up!!! You will go through u joints quite quickly. The noise you are hearing is the u joints binding and its not good.

Just dock the boat and then raise the outdrive up. I have yet to see a port so shallow you have to trim all the way up before coming to dock.

Re: Merc outdrive

see my previous post, you are likely trimming up too far. Does your trim limit switch work, or are you using the trailer button to come up?

Re: Merc outdrive

Hopefully that could be the case but it never made the noise before but i usually don't throttle onto the trailer either.
Thank you for your good advise!
