Hello to all. I am new here. My kids and I built a 20 foot Simmons Sea Skiff in 1995. I wanted to put a four stroke on it back then but found a brand new left over 1993 Johnson 60TLET with VRO, and the price was too good to pass on, $3600. Our family used it extensively on the right coast, inland and offshore. I now live in Idaho. The Johnson worked great for many years. I had the dealer replace the water pump, the VRO, (just because), and tune it up two years ago while I was refinishing the entire wooden structure(West epoxy, and interlux lp). The Johnson 60 hasn't worked well since.. Some type of vacuum leak under the cowling that I haven't been able to find yet.. I hate to take it back to the dealer, after paying over $900 for work that was less than stellar. The gas tank is built in, and this makes accurately mixing oil a little problematic, not knowing exactly how much fuel I will be adding each time I refuel.

I'm considering a new engine, Evinrude 60, Yamaha 60 (4 stroke), or a Honda. After surfing around this site, I'm a little more confused than I was before.

Do any of you have good or bad experience with these newer engines? Any pro's or con's for any of these newer 60HP outboards? The 2 stroke Evinrude seems like a good choice, less moving parts, better alternator output, but after the fiasco 10 or so years ago, I'm not sure about going with them.. Which is the most quiet? ...Most reliable? Similar fuel efficiency? I would rather ask the inmates here than rely on the manufacturers cool aid propaganda..

Thanks in advance.

What he said^^^. Your Johnson is a fantastic motor. I'd get it fixed properly and run it. If not, as mentioned, all the new outboard available today are fine products. I would personally get an ETEC if I was buying a new motor.

Thanks for the replies..

The problem seems to be in the fuel side of the VRO system. The oil bulb at the VRO tank remains pressurized. The fuel side of the system doesn't. Even while the engine is idling (trolling), the fuel line pump (bulb) looses pressure, and the engine eventually stalls.

rodbolt, I am thinking that if I unhook the fuel overflow line of the internally installed tank up in the bow, I could drain all the fuel out of the fuel line, put a little air pressure in the fuel tank with an air compressor, and look for an 'air leak' somewhere in the fuel supply side of the VRO system. Maybe spray the various parts of the fuel system with some soapy water while the fuel system is slightly pressurized with air and look for tiny bubbles where the leak is occurring.. Would this damage the 'new' VRO pump? If it won't damage the VRO system, how much air pressure could I use to look for the leak??

Thanks for your input..

take a peak at the Suzuki 60hp 4 stroke if you have a dealer near by. At 227# she is 13# lighter than the "light weight 2 stroke Etec". And they are dang good engines, but pretty much any engine is a "good" engine now adays.

There was no reason to change out the VRO (OMS) pump, that was the start of the problem, poor workmanship followed it up. Did you ever take it back for them to fix the first time, it may have been a simple honest mistake or faulty part.

If your current motor if fine except for the Fuel pump issue, then just get it fixed. If you want a new motor and cost isn't a factor, then buy a motor from the dealer you trust the most.

We can get your outboard going stick with 2stroke it's lighter. Force forum ive made alot of post. If I was betting man your floats are stuck, try some seafoam in gas and run it. Carb cleaning time check needles to see if there stuck up. Maybe fuel diaphram kit is in order.
